What counts as a dupe here

A cheap legging isn't automatically a dupe. We judged each one against its Lululemon equivalent on fabric feel (softness, weight and drape), whether it stays in place and stays opaque during workouts, how it holds up to repeated washing, and whether the sizing matches what you'd expect.

If you want the Align feel

The Align is Lululemon's soft, second-skin legging in Nulu fabric, made for yoga, Pilates and everyday wear.

CRZ YOGA Butterluxe High-Rise Leggings

This is the closest Align match we have found. The fabric has the same barely-there feel, with a lightly brushed finish that slides over skin instead of gripping it.

In our yoga flows the Butterluxe behaved almost exactly like the Align. It moved without restriction, didn't dig into the waist in seated poses and kept its shape through hour-long sessions. The fabric weight and hand feel are close to indistinguishable, the high-rise waistband sits at the same point with similar gentle compression, and the 25-inch inseam ends at the same spot on the ankle.

The differences: about 15 colors against Lululemon's rotating 40-plus, no drawcord like some Align styles have, and a small logo on the back waistband.

Buy it if the Align's feel is the point. Skip it if you mainly want compression; that's the next pick.

If you want compression for running and HIIT

90 Degree By Reflex Power Flex Leggings

The Power Flex isn't as soft as the Butterluxe, and isn't trying to be. The fabric is a little thicker and more compressive, closer to Lululemon's Fast and Free or Wunder Train than to the Align. That makes it the better legging for running, HIIT and lifting, when you want everything held in place.

Buy it for high-impact training. Skip it if you're above an XL; it stops there.

If you want pockets: the Wunder Train slot

The Wunder Train is Lululemon's answer for people who want Align softness with more support: slightly compressive fabric and a waistband meant to stay put when you move hard.

ODODOS High Waisted Yoga Leggings with Pockets

The ODODOS sits between the soft Align-type leggings and the compressive ones. The brushed interior feels good on skin, and there's enough structure for light support.

The pockets are the reason to buy it. The side pockets are deep enough to hold a Plus-size iPhone securely, and a hidden pocket inside the waistband takes cards or keys, which the pocketless Lululemon styles don't give you.

After 30-plus washes we saw slight fading on the darker colors, but no pilling and no lost stretch; the fabric kept its shape and softness through testing.

Shorts that stay put

Shorts fail in predictable ways: they ride up, bunch, or go see-through in a deep squat. Lululemon's Train With Purpose and Speed Up are the benchmark.

The Gym People High-Waist Yoga Shorts

These 6-inch shorts stay in place. The high rise gives secure coverage, and the slightly longer inseam stops the thigh-riding that shorter styles suffer from.

The quick-dry fabric handles hot yoga, outdoor runs and summer gym sessions, and the inner-thigh pockets fit a gel or a small phone without adding bulk. In pale colors the thinner fabric shows through, so buy them dark.

Free hemming. Lululemon hems its pants for free, which matters if you're shorter or taller than average. Amazon brands don't, so it's a tailor or a needle. Most of these brands now sell several inseams (21, 25, 28 and 31 inches), which narrows the gap without closing it.

Check the return terms. Most items sold by Amazon or by the brand qualify for free returns, but look before you buy, particularly during sale events, when policies sometimes change. From testing (our activewear sizing table collects fit notes from all our guides): CRZ YOGA is closest to true Lululemon sizing, and the two charts agree: CRZ's XXS to XL match Lululemon's 2 to 12 almost inch for inch, so your Align size maps straight across to the matching letter. 90 Degree by Reflex runs about half a size small and stops at XL, which is why it's missing from the plus range. ODODOS is generous through the hips and forgiving between sizes.
