The Alo Yoga Guide: Fabrics, Fit, Sizing, and What to Buy First
Alo Yoga explained: how Airlift, Airbrush, Alosoft, Seamless, Accolade, and Micro Waffle feel and wear, how sizing runs, and which pieces to buy first.

Alo Yoga is the brand that turned a legging and a cropped tank into a uniform. Founded in Los Angeles in 2007 (the name stands for air, land, ocean), it built its reputation on matte monochrome sets, high-rise 7/8 leggings, and an oversized hoodie that looks as right at a coffee shop as it does at the studio. What it did not build is a clear explanation of its own fabrics. Walk through the Alo store on Amazon and you meet Airlift, Airbrush, Alosoft, Seamless, Accolade, and Micro Waffle with almost no guidance on which is which.
This guide fixes that. We have worn each fabric through hot flow, reformer Pilates, long yin classes, and a lot of errands, and we will tell you how each one feels on the body, how it holds up after months of washing, how sizing runs, and which two or three pieces are worth buying first. If you are still deciding whether the brand is worth it at all, read our cost-per-wear breakdown alongside this. If you already own a set and want to wear it beyond the mat, the studio-to-street style guide picks up where this one ends.
The Six Alo Fabrics, Explained
Airlift: compressive, sculpting, matte
Airlift is the fabric Alo is known for and the one the Airlift Intrigue Bra and Airlift 7/8 leggings are cut from. It is a dense nylon-spandex knit with a dry, matte finish that does not shine under studio lights. On the body it feels like firm, even pressure from waist to calf. The high rise sits flat without a drawstring, and the waistband does not roll during forward folds.
The compression is the point and also the trade-off. In a 45-minute vinyasa or a reformer class it feels supportive. In a 75-minute yin class, where you are holding a pigeon pose for five minutes, some people find it starts to feel like a lot around the ribs and thighs. Airlift is also the most opaque Alo fabric, and black Airlift passes a deep-squat test in daylight.
Best for: Flow, power yoga, Pilates, and anyone who wants the sculpted look Alo is famous for.
Airbrush: smooth, medium compression, the original
Airbrush came before Airlift and is still the fabric on the Alo Moto and Goddess leggings. It is smoother and slightly glossier than Airlift, with medium compression that hugs rather than holds. The hand is silkier, the stretch is a little softer, and it feels lighter in heat.
Opacity is the thing to watch. Black and espresso Airbrush are fine. Lighter colours such as ivory, oatmeal, and pale sage can go sheer when stretched over the seat in a deep squat. If you want a light-coloured legging, buy it in Airlift, not Airbrush.
Best for: Hot yoga, everyday wear, and the Moto and Goddess silhouettes that do not exist in other fabrics.
Alosoft: brushed, buttery, and the one that pills
Alosoft is Alo's answer to Lululemon Align. It is a brushed knit with a peached, almost velvety surface and very light compression. Putting it on feels like pulling on a second, warmer skin. It is the fabric in the Alosoft Lounge line, the ribbed Alosoft tanks, and the Relay legging.
It is also the fabric we get the most complaints about, and the complaints are fair. Alosoft pills at the inner thigh and under the arm within a few months of regular use, particularly if you do mat work that rubs the legs together or if you wash it with anything with a zipper. It also holds sweat longer than Airlift and can look damp after a hot class.
Best for: Restorative and yin classes, travel days, and lounging. Not for high-friction training.
Seamless: ribbed knit sets with give
Alo's Seamless pieces are circular-knit with ribbing that runs the length of the garment. The Seamless Ribbed Favorite Bra Tank and the matching leggings and shorts have a soft, forgiving stretch and no side seams to rub. The ribbing adds visual texture that reads well in photos and hides light sweat marks.
Seamless has the lowest support and compression of any Alo fabric. It moulds to you, which is flattering, but it does not hold you. It also relaxes over a long day and can feel loose by evening if you sized up.
Best for: Barre, Pilates mat classes, walking, and layering under a hoodie. Buy your true size, not up.
Accolade: the heavyweight French terry
Accolade is not a legging fabric at all. It is the brushed, heavyweight French terry used for the Accolade Hoodie, the Accolade Straight Leg Sweatpant, and the crewneck. It is dense enough to hold a structured shape when you are standing still and soft enough inside that you will not want to take it off. The oversized cut is deliberate and the drop shoulder is built for wearing over a fitted set.
Accolade holds up better than any other Alo fabric. A year of weekly washing leaves it slightly softer, not thinner. It does shrink a touch in a hot dryer, so wash cold and tumble on low or hang.
Best for: The layer you wear to and from class, and for the studio-to-street look that made the brand.
Micro Waffle: the lounge and cold-weather line
Micro Waffle is a fine thermal knit that Alo uses for long-sleeve tees, pants, and sets. The texture is tighter than a classic waffle, so it looks polished rather than pyjama-like. It traps a little air and feels warm without being heavy, which makes it the right base layer under Accolade in winter. It is soft against the skin but has more body than Alosoft, and it does not pill as readily.
Best for: Cold-morning layers, post-class lounging, and travel.
How Alo Sizing Runs
The single most useful thing to know is that Alo does not size consistently across fabrics. Buy the wrong size in the wrong fabric and you will assume the brand does not fit you, when it is just the knit.
| Fabric | Compression | How it runs | What to order |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airlift | High | About half a size small | Size up if between sizes |
| Airbrush | Medium | Half a size small in leggings, true in Moto and Goddess | Size up for a lounge fit, true size for the look |
| Alosoft | Low | True, relaxes with wear | True size |
| Seamless | Very low | True to slightly roomy | True size, never up |
| Accolade | None | Oversized by design | True size; size down only if you want a fitted hoodie |
| Micro Waffle | None | True | True size |
A few extra notes from fitting many people. Alo leggings are built for a long torso; the high rise on Airlift and Airbrush sits above the navel on most people and can feel high on a short waist. If you are under 5'3", the 7/8 length will read as full length. If you are over 5'9", the 7/8 hits mid-shin and you will want the full-length or elongated versions. The Airlift Intrigue Bra is the easiest Alo piece to size because it fits like a standard S/M/L sports bra with light-to-medium support.
If you already own Lululemon, the practical translation is this: Alo Airlift fits like Wunder Train, half a size tighter than Align; Alosoft fits like Align. Our Alo vs Lululemon comparison goes fabric by fabric.
Care, Pilling, and How Long Each Fabric Lasts
Alo prices assume you will treat the clothes well. Here is what actually keeps them looking new.
- Wash cold, inside out, on a gentle cycle. Heat is what kills elastane. Cold water and a short cycle preserve the compression in Airlift and Airbrush for years.
- Never wash Alosoft or Seamless with zippers, Velcro, or towels. Friction against a rough surface is what causes pilling, and both fabrics have a raised surface that catches.
- Hang dry everything except Accolade. Accolade can go in the dryer on low. Leggings and bras should never see high heat.
- Skip fabric softener. It coats the fibres, kills wicking, and makes Airlift feel slick.
- Rotate. A legging worn and washed every day ages twice as fast as two leggings on alternate days. This is where the price starts to make sense across a year.
Realistic lifespans with weekly wear and correct care: Airlift and Airbrush hold shape and opacity for two to three years; Alosoft looks new for six to twelve months before pilling shows; Seamless keeps its stretch for about a year; Accolade goes three years and beyond. Our guide on how to wash workout clothes covers the odour and detergent side in more detail.
Verdict on durability: buy Airlift and Accolade if you want pieces that outlast their price, and treat Alosoft as a comfort splurge with a shorter life.
What to Buy First, by Budget
Alo pieces make the most sense as a set, but you do not need to start with one. Here is the order we recommend.
Under $100: one bra
Start with the Airlift Intrigue Bra in black, gravel, or espresso. It costs about $78, fits predictably, and pairs with any dark legging you already own. You get the matte Alo fabric and the crossback that stays put in inversions, and you find out whether the Airlift hand suits you before spending more.
Under $150: one legging
If you can only buy one legging, buy the Airlift High-Waist 7/8 Speedwork Legging in black. It is the most opaque, the most sculpting, and the longest lasting. If you prefer a softer feel and mostly do slow classes, the Alosoft 7/8 Relay Legging is the comfort pick at a lower price, with the pilling caveat above. See our best Alo leggings ranking for more length and cut options.
Under $250: the set
Intrigue bra plus Airlift 7/8 legging in the same colour. This is the look. Espresso and black are the safest first-set colours because they are opaque, hide sweat, and go with every hoodie and shoe you own. Our roundup of Alo sets and matching outfits covers the colour pairings.
Under $400: the set plus the hoodie
Add the Accolade Hoodie. It is the piece that turns a workout set into an outfit and it is the one you will reach for on days you do not train. If the hoodie feels like too much, the Accolade Straight Leg Sweatpant is the alternative that does the same job for the lower half.
Common Regrets
We asked a group of long-time Alo wearers what they would not buy again. The same five answers came up.
- Light Airbrush without a squat test. Ivory and oatmeal Airbrush go sheer over the seat. Buy pale colours in Airlift, or test in front of a mirror before removing tags.
- Alosoft for high-friction training. People who bought Alosoft for lifting or running regretted it within three months because of pilling. It is a lounge and restorative fabric.
- Sizing up in Seamless. Seamless relaxes through the day. A size up ends up baggy at the knee by evening.
- Buying the trendy colour first. Candy pink and bright red sets are fun on the feed and hard to wear twice a week. The muted palette (ivory, espresso, sage, gravel, black) is what earns the cost per wear.
- Paying full price in January. Alo runs deep sales around Black Friday and late summer. Patience saves 20 to 40 percent on core pieces.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Alo Yoga run small?
Airlift and Airbrush run about half a size small because of the compression. Alosoft, Seamless, Micro Waffle, and Accolade run true. If you are between sizes in Airlift, size up. If you are between sizes in Seamless, size down.
Is Airlift or Airbrush better?
Airlift is more compressive, more opaque, and more sculpting. Airbrush is softer, smoother, and cooler in heat. Choose Airlift for the signature look and for light colours; choose Airbrush for hot yoga and for the Moto and Goddess cuts.
Why does my Alosoft legging pill?
Alosoft has a brushed surface that catches on friction. Inner-thigh rub during mat work and washing with rough items both cause pilling. Wash it alone, inside out, cold, and hang dry to slow it down. It will still pill eventually; that is the trade for the softness.
Are Alo leggings squat-proof?
Black and espresso Airlift and Airbrush are. Light-coloured Airbrush is not reliably squat-proof. Light-coloured Airlift is much better. Always test in daylight before removing tags.
Which Alo piece is best for beginners?
The Airlift Intrigue Bra plus a black Airlift 7/8 legging. Both are opaque, both are easy to size, and together they form the set the brand is known for. If you are new to practice altogether, our yoga for beginners guide covers everything else you need before your first class.
Can I buy Alo Yoga on Amazon?
Yes. Alo sells through its official store on Amazon, which makes returns simple if a size does not work. Browse Alo Yoga on Amazon to see current colours and stock.
The Bottom Line
Alo Yoga is six different fabrics under one label, and the brand makes far more sense once you know which one you are buying. Airlift is the firm, matte, long-lasting one that earned the reputation. Airbrush is its smoother, cooler sibling. Alosoft is the buttery comfort fabric that pills. Seamless is the soft ribbed knit that relaxes. Accolade and Micro Waffle are the layers that make a set an outfit.
Start with an Airlift Intrigue Bra and a black Airlift 7/8 legging, wash them cold and hang them dry, and add the Accolade Hoodie when you can. Buy muted colours first, size up in Airlift if you are between sizes, and save Alosoft for the days you are not sweating hard. Do that and Alo earns its price.
