Best Workout Clothes Under $30: Budget Activewear That Actually Performs

By FlexWearLabUpdated

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. How we test

Quick answer

For women’s studio wear, compare CRZ YOGA Butterluxe with Sunzel flare leggings; the flare cut is less suitable for cycling. For men’s training, compare BALEAF lined 5-inch shorts with the NELEUS three-pack. Check current total prices: Butterluxe can exceed $30 and pack prices differ from per-shirt costs.

Compare two pairs of leggings, running shorts, a pack of training shirts and a women’s tee. The linked Butterluxe and NELEUS variants are current listing-based selections, separate from the older tested pieces. Start here if you want gear that performs without paying premium-brand prices.

For a separate dry change and everyday layers around training, use our affordable everyday layers guide. It distinguishes casual ribbed tops and fleece from technical workout clothes; its optional pants and premium slippers are not promised to fit this page’s budget threshold.

The older shortlist came from training and wash comparisons. The two replacement listings below have not repeated those tests and carry no rating.

Basic tees and leggings are where budget brands have closed the gap with premium labels the most.

Prices and availability change; check Amazon for current details.

Selected-listing update: The linked Butterluxe is Black / Small, 25-inch; the linked NELEUS, where included, is a 5033 mesh three-pack, US Medium / EU Large. These replace inaccessible ASINs. Earlier testing observations concern the older selections and have not been repeated for these variants. The current cards carry no inherited rating.

How to tell good cheap activewear from bad

Four things decide whether a budget legging lasts three months or three years.

Fabric. Look for roughly 75 to 85 percent polyester with 15 to 25 percent spandex (elastane). That mix wicks sweat and stretches well. Pure cotton is comfortable but soaks up sweat and takes ages to dry, so leave it for rest days.

Seams. Flatlock seams lie flat and don't chafe; standard overlocked seams can dig in over hundreds of reps. Plenty of budget brands now use flatlock on the inner thighs and underarms.

Waistband. A wide, high-rise band spreads the pressure and stays up. Thin or low-rise bands roll down during squats, burpees and sit-ups.

Opacity. This is where cheap leggings fail most often, especially in light colors. Look for fabric of at least 250 GSM (grams per square meter) and read recent reviews for see-through complaints.

Thicker seamless knits like these are usually the safest bet for opacity at the budget end.

The five picks

1. CRZ YOGA Butterluxe High Waisted Leggings

The current CRZ YOGA Butterluxe selection is Black / Small, with a 25-inch high-rise 7/8 cut. The manufacturer describes soft fabric and gentle compression. Seller CRZ YOGA showed stock on October 20. Check your waist and hip measurements and intended inseam; we have not repeated squat, opacity, wash or fit tests on this linked selection. It is an option for yoga and everyday wear, rather than evidence of firm compression for running or lifting.

2. BALEAF Men's 5-Inch Running Shorts

The built-in brief liner means you don't need separate compression shorts, and the zippered side pocket holds a phone steady through sprints and intervals. The shell is lightweight polyester that dries very fast, even on humid outdoor runs; the liner is 90% polyester and 10% spandex.

They fit true to size, with an elastic waistband and an inside drawstring. The one weakness is the liner, which can shift a little on runs past 10 miles. For shorter runs, HIIT and gym work they are hard to fault.

3. NELEUS Men's Dry Fit Athletic Shirts (3-Pack)

The current NELEUS 5033 selection is a mesh Black/Grey/Red three-pack in US Medium / EU Large. Seller Neleus showed stock on October 20. Compare the pack total and the size chart. This construction can differ from the older dry-fit selection; we have not repeated its drying, wash or fit tests, so the old half-size and durability advice does not apply.

4. Sunzel Flare Leggings with Pockets

The crossover V-waist sits high and flatters most body types, and the deep side pockets on both legs hold a full-size phone without bouncing or dragging the waistband down. The fabric (80% polyester, 20% spandex) is thick, with gentle compression, and it was fully opaque in every color we tested, lighter shades included. They fit true to size.

The flare is the thing to think about. It is comfortable for most gym work, but it can catch on bike pedals or get pulled into a rowing machine's rail. If those machines are your main training, get a tapered or straight leg. For barre, yoga, Pilates and wearing to brunch afterward, these are the pair.

5. Under Armour Women's Tech V-Neck T-Shirt

This is a name-brand training shirt at a budget price. UA Tech (100% polyester) wicks sweat, feels soft, dries much faster than cotton and holds odor better than most cheap shirts. The relaxed fit drapes without clinging. The only complaint is a limited choice of base colors. It suits any training, runs and everyday wear.

Making a small budget go further

Buy multi-packs of the basics. NELEUS, TSLA and Hanes Sport all sell shirts and shorts in packs, so once you find one you like, buy it in bulk.

Stacks of folded t-shirts on a table in a laundromat
Multi-packs let you build a full week of gym shirts for the price of one premium tee.

Read the fibre content before the reviews. The FTC's textile labeling rules require every garment to list its fibres by percentage of weight, so the label tells you whether a shirt is polyester that wicks or a cotton blend that holds sweat.

Then read recent reviews. Quality control is less consistent at this level, so check reviews from the last three months for changes in fabric, sizing or construction, ideally from people with your build and your kind of training.

Amazon Basics is worth a look if money is very tight. Its performance leggings and training shorts are simple but cover basic training.

Look after what you buy. Wash cold, skip the dryer and never use fabric softener, which coats synthetic fibers and stops them wicking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best cheap workout clothes?

Sunzel Flare Leggings, BALEAF Men's 5-Inch Running Shorts, the NELEUS Dry Fit 3-pack and the Under Armour Women's Tech V-Neck. The CRZ YOGA Butterluxe leggings, just over this budget, are the standout, with much of the Lululemon Align feel for far less.

Are cheap leggings squat-proof?

Some are. The Sunzel Flare Leggings were fully opaque in every color we tested, lighter shades included. The current Butterluxe selection has not been tested here for opacity. Check it under your own lighting and read feedback for the selected color.

What is the best cheap moisture-wicking workout shirt?

The NELEUS 5033 mesh three-pack is a listing-based option in US Medium / EU Large. Its drying speed, shrinkage and fit have not been independently tested. For a women’s cut, compare the Under Armour Tech V-Neck and its own size chart.

What fabric should budget activewear be made of?

Roughly 75 to 85 percent polyester with 15 to 25 percent spandex, which wicks sweat and stretches well. Avoid pure cotton for hard training because it holds sweat and dries slowly, and look for flatlock seams at the inner thighs and underarms.

How do I make cheap workout clothes last longer?

Wash them cold, skip the dryer and never use fabric softener, which coats synthetic fibers and stops them wicking. With that care, budget gear lasts years instead of months.
