The question is not whether it is close. It is how close, where the gap is, and whether the gap is worth $66.

We wore both for a year: a black CRZ Butterluxe and a black Lululemon Align 28", each twice a week, washed the same way, worn to the same classes. This is the side-by-side on fabric feel, waistband, opacity, colour range, sizing, what a year of wear did to each, and what that means per wear. Put a hand inside each legging and the first impression is almost identical: a soft, brushed, matte knit with a faint peach-skin finish. Butterluxe is a nylon and spandex blend built specifically to imitate Nulu, and it succeeds. The softness is there, the light compression is there, the way the fabric folds rather than creases is there.

Hold them up to a window and you start to see the difference. Align is thinner and lighter; Butterluxe is slightly heavier and has a fraction more body. On the leg, that translates to Align feeling cooler and airier, especially behind the knee, while Butterluxe feels a little more present and a little warmer. In a 60-minute flow neither bothered us. In a 90-minute heated class the extra weight of Butterluxe was noticeable, and Align was the more comfortable of the two.

Seams and construction are closer than they have any right to be. Both have a gusset, both keep side seams to a minimum, and CRZ's stitching is flat and clean. Align's is slightly finer.

Winner: Align, by a margin most people will not feel until the room is hot.

Waistband longevity

This is where the year separates them. Both leggings use a wide, unlined band of the main fabric, sitting high and folding flat. On day one they behave the same: no rolling, no digging, nothing to adjust in a forward fold.

By month six, CRZ's waistband had started to relax. It was not rolling and it was not falling down, but the top edge had softened and the band sat a touch lower after a wash than it had before. By month twelve it had a faint wave to it in the mirror and needed a hitch after a deep squat. Align's band, washed the same way, was flat and even at the end of the year.

We think this is the single most important difference between the two. A legging you have to adjust is a legging you stop reaching for, and CRZ's band is the thing that ages first.

Winner: Align, clearly.

Opacity

Here CRZ has the edge, and it is because of the same weight difference that costs it in a hot room. Butterluxe is marginally thicker, and in a full squat in pale grey it stayed opaque where a pale Align showed the outline of underwear seams. In black, both were fully opaque in every position we tried, including a wide-leg forward fold under studio lights.

Colour range

CRZ wins this outright. Butterluxe is available in something like forty shades on Amazon at any one time, from the standard black, navy and charcoal through to the muted studio palette that Alo made fashionable and the saturated brights Lululemon does well. Align's range is wide in store, but on Amazon it narrows to a handful of core colours in each inseam, and the pretty seasonal shades sell out.

Sizing

Both run true to size, which is rarer than it sounds in dupe territory. CRZ's size chart is honest, its XS to XL covers roughly Lululemon's 2 to 12, and the 25-inch and 28-inch inseams line up with Align's. Take your normal size in either.

The one nuance is that Butterluxe has a fraction more stretch recovery on the first wear, so if you are between sizes and want a snugger fit, size down in CRZ. Do not size down in Align; the fabric is too thin to survive being stretched beyond its design. Align after a year: fabric still light and soft, no fading in black, waistband flat. Pilling at the inner thighs and a small patch on one hip from a bag strap. No thinning, no sheerness. It looks like a well-cared-for Align.

CRZ after a year: fabric slightly less soft than new but still pleasant, no fading, no thinning, no sheerness, and noticeably less pilling than Align at the thighs. Waistband relaxed, with a faint wave at the top edge and a tendency to need a hitch after squats. It looks like a legging that has done a year's honest work.

Neither failed. Both are still in rotation. But if you laid them side by side, you would know which one cost $98.

Align's durability closes some of the gap over a longer horizon, but it does not close it. Even if Align lasts three years and CRZ lasts one, you could buy three CRZs over that period for $96 and still be ahead, with a fresh waistband each year.
