HydroJug vs Stanley vs Owala: Which 40 oz Bottle Fits Your Day?
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. How we test
Quick answer
Buy the Owala FreeSip if the bottle goes in a bag: it's the only one of the three with a locking lid. Buy the Stanley Quencher H2.0 if it lives in a car cup holder and on your desk. The HydroJug Traveler is the Stanley's closest rival, with a handle that works for either hand, a flip straw and triple-wall insulation.

In this article
If your bottle goes in a gym bag, buy the Owala FreeSip. If it lives in a car cup holder and on your desk, buy the Stanley Quencher H2.0 or the HydroJug Traveler. That one question settles it for most people, because the Owala is a bottle with a locking lid and the other two are tumblers designed to stay upright.
We compared the 40 oz version of each, from the brand's own Amazon listing; we haven't tested them. Where a listing is silent, the table says so.

Lid and leaks
This is the real difference. The Owala's push button opens a cover over the spout, and the carry loop swings across to lock it, so it can lie on its side in a bag. Stanley's FlowState lid turns between a straw opening, a wider drink opening and a full cover, which Stanley says adds leak resistance. HydroJug also calls the Traveler leak resistant. Neither tumbler is sold as leakproof, and both are meant to stand up.
If you want a straw and a leakproof seal in one bottle, neither tumbler is it; the Hydro Flask Flex Straw in our roundup is listed as leakproof when closed.
Cup holders and carrying
Stanley and HydroJug both narrow at the base to fit a car cup holder, and both have a side handle; HydroJug's is designed for either hand. Owala's listing says the 40 oz FreeSip doesn't fit a standard car cup holder and suggests an organiser or door pocket. The Owala carries by its loop, which is easier to clip to a bag than a tumbler handle.
Insulation
Owala lists double-wall insulation and 24 hours of cold. Stanley lists double-wall vacuum insulation without a number of hours on this listing. HydroJug lists triple-wall insulation without a number of hours. All three are stainless steel, so all three keep ice for a long session; the listings don't give a like-for-like test, so don't pick on insulation alone.
Cleaning and warranty
Stanley and HydroJug both say dishwasher safe, and HydroJug's straw detaches. The Owala listing doesn't mention the dishwasher. Stanley adds a lifetime warranty on products bought from authorised sellers; on this listing the seller is Amazon.com.
Other sizes
40 oz is where all three overlap, but it isn't the only size. Stanley's listing names five Quencher H2.0 sizes, 14, 20, 30, 40 and 64 oz, and says every size except the 64 oz has the narrow base that fits a car cup holder. The 14 oz is the size on Amazon's creator top-seller list this fall; it's a desk and car cup, not a gym bottle. HydroJug sells the Traveler in 32 and 40 oz, plus a 20 oz kids' version. On Amazon the Owala FreeSip comes in 32 and 40 oz among other sizes, and the 32 oz is the one in our gifts for new gym-goers.
For an hour in the gym with a fountain nearby, 30 to 32 oz is enough and easier to carry. Go 40 oz if you train longer, train outdoors or don't want to refill. Skip the 64 oz Stanley if you need the cup holder; it's the one size that doesn't fit.
Which one to buy
- Owala FreeSip if the bottle travels in a bag, or if you like to switch between sipping and swigging.
- Stanley Quencher H2.0 if it lives in the car and on the desk, and you want the most lid options and the lifetime warranty.
- HydroJug Traveler if you want the Stanley format with triple-wall insulation and a handle that works for either hand.

Which is more leakproof, Owala or Stanley?

Does the Owala FreeSip fit in a car cup holder?
