FAQ

Yoga & Pilates questions, answered

What do I actually need to start yoga at home?

A mat with decent grip, two blocks, and a strap cover almost every beginner class. Skip the wheel, bolster, and expensive mat until you know which styles you enjoy. Our beginner guide lists a full setup for well under $100.

Is a thicker yoga mat better?

Not always. 4 to 5 mm suits most people; 6 mm helps sensitive knees; half-inch foam mats are too soft for standing balance poses but fine for stretching and Pilates mat work. Travel mats under 2 mm are for packing, not daily practice.

Do I need grip socks for Pilates?

Most reformer and barre studios require them for hygiene and safety. For mat Pilates at home they are optional, but they keep your feet from sliding on a smooth mat.

Is a home Pilates reformer worth it?

If you take reformer classes at least twice a week, a home machine pays for itself within a year of studio fees. If you are new to Pilates, start with mat work and a ring, ball, and bands first.

Can I wear regular leggings to yoga?

Yes. Thick compression leggings can feel restrictive in deep folds, so buttery-soft, high-rise styles are more comfortable, but any opaque, stretchy legging works for a first class.
