We wore all three through a full season of vinyasa, reformer Pilates, barre, cold-morning walks and plenty of coffee runs afterwards. How We Tested

Each legging was worn for at least twelve sessions across three settings: a 60-minute heated vinyasa class, a 50-minute reformer or barre class, and a full day of street wear with sitting, walking, and stairs. We checked opacity in a mirror in a deep forward fold and a wide squat under studio lighting, measured waistband roll after a sweaty class, and washed every pair ten times on cold, hung to dry, to watch for pilling and fading. Sizing notes come from three testers between US sizes 2 and 12.

We weighted the scores toward how each pair performs at the activity it is designed for, then adjusted for price and versatility. A lounge legging is not marked down for being bad at burpees, but it is marked down if it pills after a month.

1. Alo Yoga Airbrush High-Waist Highlight Goddess Legging: best for yoga

Airbrush is Alo's original fabric, and it's still the one most people should start with. It is smooth and matte with a faint sheen under light, medium compression that supports without squeezing, and a hand feel that sits between Lululemon Align's softness and Wunder Train's structure. In a 90-degree flow it wicks well enough that the fabric never felt heavy, and it dried fully on the walk home.

The Goddess silhouette adds a long, stirrup-free hem that you scrunch above the ankle for a leg-warmer effect. On a 5'9" tester it looked exactly like the campaign imagery. On a 5'3" tester it needed deliberate scrunching or it pooled. Both agreed the Airbrush Goddess legging is the pair they would keep if they could only keep one.

Opacity was perfect in black, espresso, and gravel through every forward fold. In ivory we could see the outline of seams in a deep squat, which is true of every pale legging we have ever tested. Sizing runs true.

2. Alo Yoga Airlift High-Waist 7/8 Speedwork Legging: best for Pilates, barre and street

Airlift is a heavier, more compressive knit with a subtle sheen and reflective piping on the current Speedwork version. It sculpts: the waistband is wide and firm, the fabric holds its shape through long sets of reformer footwork, and it never once rolled or slid. The 7/8 length hits just above the ankle bone on average heights, which is the proportion Alo's whole studio-to-street look depends on.

It's also the pair that got compliments away from the studio. There are trade-offs. Airlift runs small: two of three testers sized up. And in a slow yin class with five-minute holds, the compression became something you notice. It's a fabric for moving against resistance, not for being still.

3. Alo Yoga Alosoft High-Waist 7/8 Relay Legging: best for lounge and travel

Alosoft is brushed on the inside and out, which gives it the cloud-soft feel people describe when they say Alo is "buttery". It really is the most comfortable of the three for a long day of sitting, a flight, or a rest-day walk, and the heathered colours are the prettiest in the line.

It is not a performance fabric. In a heated class it held sweat rather than moving it, and after ten washes the inner thigh showed light pilling on the tester who wore it for hill walks. Treat it the way you would treat a cashmere jumper: wear it for what it is good at, wash it cold, never tumble dry.

Buy it for rest days and travel, not for class.

Choose the fabric, then the colour

Every Alo legging is sold in a dozen colours, and the colour is what the photos sell. Choose the fabric for how you move, then pick the colour. If you split time between yoga and Pilates, Airbrush is the compromise that is good at both. If your practice is mostly reformer and you want the Alo look on the street, go Airlift.

Rise and length

Alo's high-waist rise sits at the natural waist on most bodies and is the reason the cropped-top proportion works. The 7/8 length is the brand's signature; full length adds about two inches and suits taller frames or winter. The Goddess hem is a style choice: it looks fantastic scrunched, and slightly untidy if it is not.

Sizing

Cold wash, inside out, no fabric softener, hang dry, and read the care label on your pair: the FTC's Care Labeling Rule requires it to give the washing and drying method and warn about anything that would damage the fabric.
