Key Pros
  • +Smooth, matte Airbrush fabric with medium compression that moves with a flow instead of fighting it

  • +Firm, sculpting compression that holds through squats, reformer footwork, and barre pulses
  • +Thick waistband stays flat and never rolls, even under a cropped top
  • +Brushed, cloud-soft hand feel that makes it the pair you reach for on rest days
  • +Light compression sits comfortably for hours of sitting or travel
Key Cons
-The extra-long hem bunches on shorter frames unless you scrunch it deliberately
-Runs small; the compression can feel restrictive in slow, long-hold yoga
-Brushed fabric pills at the inner thigh with high-friction use and shows lint

Alo built its reputation on three fabrics, and almost every question we get about the brand comes down to which one to buy. Airlift is the sculpted, campaign-shot legging. Airbrush is the original, smooth and forgiving. Alosoft is the brushed, buttery one that feels like a favourite sweatshirt. They sit at different prices, they wear differently, and they are not interchangeable.

We wore all three through a full season of vinyasa, reformer Pilates, barre, cold-morning walks, and the coffee-shop afterlife that Alo is really designed for. This guide explains what each fabric is actually like on the body, who it is for, how sizing and opacity behave, and which one is worth your money first. If you are weighing Alo against its obvious rival, read this alongside our Alo Yoga vs Lululemon comparison.

Black Airlift or Airbrush is the safest first buy: opaque in every fold and it matches every top you already own.

How We Tested

Each legging was worn for at least twelve sessions across three settings: a 60-minute heated vinyasa class, a 50-minute reformer or barre class, and a full day of street wear with sitting, walking, and stairs. We checked opacity in a mirror in a deep forward fold and a wide squat under studio lighting, measured waistband roll after a sweaty class, and washed every pair ten times on cold, hung to dry, to watch for pilling and fading. Sizing notes come from three testers between US sizes 2 and 12.

We weighted the scores toward how each pair performs at the activity it is designed for, then adjusted for price and versatility. A lounge legging is not marked down for being bad at burpees, but it is marked down if it pills after a month.

Detailed Reviews

1. Alo Yoga Airbrush High-Waist Highlight Goddess Legging — Best for Yoga

Airbrush is where Alo started, and it remains the fabric most people should start with. It is smooth and matte with a faint sheen under light, medium compression that supports without squeezing, and a hand feel that sits between Lululemon Align's softness and Wunder Train's structure. In a 90-degree flow it wicks well enough that the fabric never felt heavy, and it dried fully on the walk home.

The Goddess silhouette adds a long, stirrup-free hem that you scrunch above the ankle for a leg-warmer effect. On a 5'9" tester it looked exactly like the campaign imagery. On a 5'3" tester it needed deliberate scrunching or it pooled. Both agreed the Airbrush Goddess legging is the pair they would keep if they could only keep one.

Opacity was perfect in black, espresso, and gravel through every forward fold. In ivory we could see the outline of seams in a deep squat, which is true of every pale legging we have ever tested. Sizing runs true.

Best for: yoga practitioners who want the signature Alo fabric at the most sensible price in the line.

2. Alo Yoga Airlift High-Waist 7/8 Speedwork Legging — Best for Pilates, Barre, and Street

Airlift is a heavier, more compressive knit with a matte, almost architectural finish. It sculpts: the waistband is wide and firm, the fabric holds its shape through a hundred reformer footwork reps, and it never once rolled or slid. The 7/8 length hits just above the ankle bone on average heights, which is the proportion Alo's whole studio-to-street look depends on.

It is also the legging that draws compliments away from the mat. Paired with the Airlift Intrigue bra in the same colour it reads as an outfit, not activewear. We cover how to build those sets in Best Alo Yoga sets and matching outfits.

The trade-offs are real. Airlift runs small; two of three testers sized up. And in a slow yin class with five-minute holds, the compression became something you notice. This is a fabric for movement with resistance, not for stillness.

Best for: reformer Pilates, barre, strength days, and anyone who wants the sculpted look Alo is known for.

3. Alo Yoga Alosoft High-Waist 7/8 Relay Legging — Best for Lounge and Travel

Alosoft is brushed on the inside and out, which gives it the cloud-soft feel people describe when they say Alo is "buttery". It is genuinely the most comfortable of the three for a long day of sitting, a flight, or a rest-day walk, and the heathered colours are the prettiest in the line.

It is not a performance fabric. In a heated class it held sweat rather than moving it, and after ten washes the inner thigh showed light pilling on the tester who wore it for hill walks. Treat it the way you would treat a cashmere jumper: wear it for what it is good at, wash it cold, never tumble dry.

Best for: rest days, travel, and the coffee-run half of studio-to-street.

Buying Guide

Fabric is the decision, not colour

Every Alo legging is sold in a dozen colours, and the colour is what the photos sell. Choose the fabric for how you move, then pick the colour. If you split time between yoga and Pilates, Airbrush is the compromise that is good at both. If your practice is mostly reformer and you want the Alo look on the street, go Airlift.

Rise and length

Alo's high-waist rise sits at the natural waist on most bodies and is the reason the cropped-top proportion works. The 7/8 length is the brand's signature; full length adds about two inches and suits taller frames or winter. The Goddess hem is a style choice: it looks fantastic scrunched, and slightly untidy if it is not.

Sizing

Airbrush and Alosoft run true to Alo's size chart. Airlift runs small, and the compression means a too-tight pair will not "give". If you are between sizes in Airlift, take the larger one. Our yoga pants vs leggings explainer covers the general fit rules that apply here.

Care that keeps the price justified

Cold wash, inside out, no fabric softener, hang dry. Fabric softener is what makes performance fabric stop wicking, and the dryer is what makes it lose its snap. Our how to wash workout clothes guide has the full routine. Alosoft additionally wants a wash bag to reduce friction pilling.

When the price is not worth it

If you want the soft Alo feel for lounging and do not care about the label, an Amazon dupe gets you most of the way for a third of the price. We tested them in Best Alo Yoga dupes on Amazon. Airlift, on the other hand, has no convincing dupe we have found; the compression and finish are the part you are paying for.

Common Mistakes

Buying Airlift for yin or restorative yoga. The compression that feels great in a barre class becomes a distraction in a ten-minute hip opener. Airbrush is the right fabric there.

Buying Alosoft for the gym. It pills where fabric meets fabric or equipment, and it holds sweat. Keep it for the day around the class, not the class.

Ordering Airlift in your usual size without reading reviews. Sizing up is the single most common piece of advice from Alo owners, and it is correct.

Choosing ivory as a first pair. Pale Alo colours are beautiful and less forgiving in a forward fold. Buy the first pair in black, espresso, or gravel, then add a pale pair once you know the fabric.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Alo legging is most like Lululemon Align?

Airbrush is the closest in feel, though Align is softer and Airbrush is slightly more structured. Alosoft is softer than Align but less sleek. The full head-to-head is in our Alo vs Lululemon comparison.

Are Alo leggings squat-proof?

Airlift and Airbrush passed our forward-fold and wide-squat tests in every dark colour. Alosoft passed in dark colours too. Pale shades in any fabric show seam outlines under bright light.

Do Alo leggings run small?

Airlift runs small; size up if you are between sizes. Airbrush and Alosoft run true to Alo's size chart.

Is Alo sold on Amazon, and is it genuine?

Yes. Alo sells through its official Amazon store, which is where every link in this guide points. The listing will show "Visit the Alo Store" under the title; colours and sizes are narrower than on alo.com.

How long do Alo leggings last?

Airlift and Airbrush kept their compression and colour through our ten-wash test and a season of use. Alosoft showed light pilling in high-friction areas. With cold washing and hang drying, expect two to three years of weekly wear from the first two.

The Bottom Line

Start with the Airbrush Goddess legging if your practice is yoga: it is the fabric that made Alo, it is the most forgiving of the three, and at $89 it is the best value in the range. Move to the Airlift 7/8 Speedwork when you want sculpting compression for Pilates and barre and the polished street look, and size up. Save the Alosoft Relay for the days you are not training at all; it is the softest thing Alo makes, and the least durable.

Three fabrics, three jobs. Match the pair to the job and the price starts to make sense.
