Most people who practise regularly should buy the CRZ Butterluxe. Lululemon, Beyond Yoga and the Amazon favorites from Colorfulkoala and Heathyoga each beat it for someone, and the rest of this page says who.

A yoga pant has to stay opaque when you fold in half, stay put when you go upside down, and stay comfortable through ten minutes of savasana. Plenty of pairs look fine standing up and fail on the mat. We spent the summer wearing the most popular pairs on Amazon through vinyasa, yin, hot yoga and mat Pilates classes.

What we checked in every pair

Each pair went through at least six classes and three wash cycles.

For opacity, we folded into uttanasana in front of a mirror under studio lighting, then repeated it in direct sunlight. Black hides a lot, so we also tried at least one mid-tone color per brand, which is where thin nylon shows through.

For the waistband, we noted whether the band stayed flat, folded over or slid in downward dog, shoulder stand and deep twists. A band that rolls is something you notice every class.

On fabric, most people are chasing Lululemon's Nulu, a brushed nylon and Lycra blend that feels almost weightless. Amazon brands sell their own versions under names like Butterluxe or Dreamlux. We judged how close each gets and how it breathes in a heated room.

Nearly every pair here is high-rise, which is right for yoga. A 25-inch inseam hits above the ankle on most people around 5'5"; 28 inches is full length. Barre is the strictest test of all this, with close mirrors and small, slow movements, and what to wear to barre class is specific about it.

We took sizes from the Amazon listing, not the brand site. Several brands sell the extended range only in some colors, and we flag that below.

The five pairs

1. CRZ YOGA Butterluxe High Waisted Lounge Legging: the one most people should buy

Butterluxe is a brushed nylon and spandex blend, and in the hand it is very close to Nulu. Side by side it is a touch thicker and a little less cool to the touch; in class you would struggle to tell them apart. Our Lululemon dupes on Amazon guide covers the wider comparison.

The listing offers 25-inch and 28-inch inseams, a long color list and a hidden waistband pocket that takes a key and a card. Opacity was solid in black and the darker colors. The weak spot is the waistband on a short torso: our tester at around 5'2" found it folded over in deep seated twists. Taller testers had no problem.

Sizes run XXS to XL with a separate plus listing. On the two brands' own charts, CRZ's XXS to XL line up with Lululemon's 2 to 12 (a CRZ S is a 26.6-inch waist and 37-inch hip; a Lululemon 6 is 26 to 27 and 36 to 37), so take the letter that matches your Lululemon size and check the CRZ YOGA size guide if you are between sizes. It holds up better than the Align and comes out of the wash looking the same as it went in.

Buy it if you want the Align feel without paying for the Align.

2. Lululemon Align High-Rise Pant 28": the softest, if you treat it gently

Everything else here gets compared with the Align. Nulu is thin, brushed and cool, and it stretches with no sense of resistance. That matters most in yin, where you hold poses for minutes: nothing digs in, nothing binds behind the knee, and the flat waistband sits well above the navel without rolling.

It is more opaque than its thinness suggests. Black, navy and the darker earth tones passed the forward-fold check. The lightest colors are borderline in direct sun, so stay with mid and dark tones if that worries you. There is a small waistband pocket and no side pockets.

The Amazon listing runs 0 to 20 in 25-inch and 28-inch inseams, true to Lululemon's chart. The catch is durability. Nulu pills on rough surfaces, under a backpack strap, or anywhere else with friction. Kept for the mat, it lasts; worn as everyday leggings, it won't.

Buy it for slow, floor-based or heated practice if you are willing to baby it.

3. Beyond Yoga Spacedye Caught in the Midi: Align softness that lasts

Spacedye is the closest premium rival to Nulu, and it is a polyester and elastane knit rather than nylon, so it resists pilling much better. Our pair still looks new after a full summer, including a few sessions on rough grass in the park that would have marked an Align.

It feels soft and slightly heavier than Nulu, with light compression you notice in standing poses and forget in seated ones. The 28-inch inseam is a midi on taller bodies and full length under about 5'6". The five-inch waistband sits at the natural waist and did not move in wheel, headstand or a long twisting sequence. There are no outside seams, which you appreciate lying on your side in Pilates.

Opacity is excellent even in the heathered mid-tones, but the heather shows sweat patches in hot yoga. Sizes run XXS to 4X on the listing and fit generously, so consider sizing down if you are between sizes.

Buy it if you loved the Align and are tired of replacing pilled pairs.

4. Colorfulkoala Buttery Soft High Waisted 7/8 Yoga Pants: the lightweight budget pick

Colorfulkoala's listing calls the fabric buttery soft, lightweight and non-see-through, with gentle compression, a seamless waistband and flatlock seams. It has a smooth peached finish. Lightweight is the operative word: we would buy it in the darker shades and do a forward fold at home before trusting a pale one.

The waistband stayed flat through everything we tried, and the 25-inch inseam landed just above the ankle on a 5'6" tester. If heated classes are most of your practice, read what to wear to hot yoga.

The regular listing runs XS to XL, and there is a separate plus-size line in a full-length cut with the same fabric.

Buy it for a light, soft 7/8 pant at a low price, in a darker color and mainly for unheated rooms. There are no pockets.

5. Heathyoga Bootcut Yoga Pants with Pockets: a flare with real pockets

This is polyester and spandex, not nylon, so it is not as soft as the pairs above. It is thick, fully opaque and keeps its shape through the wash, and the wide, firm waistband stays put in inversions.

The pockets are the reason to buy it. Two deep side pockets take a large phone and the rear pocket holds a card, which matters if you walk to class or wear the same pants to work. It comes in 28, 30 and 32-inch inseams, and the unfinished hem is made to be cut to length without unraveling.

The yoga-specific drawback: in standing balances and transitions the flared hem can catch under your heel. You learn to flip it clear, but it takes a few classes to become a habit. The listing runs XS to 3XL.

Buy it if you want one pair for class, the office and errands, and value pockets over the softest fabric.

Choosing rise, inseam and fabric

Rise

Go high-rise. A waistband above the navel has more surface to grip and doesn't roll when you fold forward or invert; mid-rise pants tend to gap at the back in downward dog. With a short torso, look for a band around four inches tall rather than five.

Inseam length

A 7/8 inseam is the safest default because it never bunches at the ankle. A 28-inch pant on a 5'2" frame bunches there and pulls at the knee in warrior poses.

Fabric

Brushed nylon and spandex (the Nulu style) is the softest and lightest, and the best choice for slow or heated practice. Polyester blends last longer and are often more opaque, but feel slicker and warmer. Beyond Yoga's polyester Spacedye is the exception that manages soft and durable. Pale pink or grey in the thinnest Nulu-style fabric is where most opacity complaints come from. If you want light colors, buy the Heathyoga.

Pockets

When a yoga pant is the wrong buy

Most Align pilling complaints come from wearing them as daily leggings. If you want one pair for yoga, the gym and errands, get the Beyond Yoga or Colorfulkoala instead.
