What to look for

Waterproof or water-resistant?

They are not the same. Waterproof jackets use a membrane, such as Gore-Tex or a brand's own, that blocks water completely; they are rated by hydrostatic head, and true waterproofing starts around 10,000mm. Water-resistant jackets rely on a DWR (durable water repellent) coating that makes water bead and roll off, but they wet through in sustained rain.

Where you run decides it. Trail runners in the Pacific Northwest need a membrane. If you only meet the odd drizzle, a water-resistant shell saves money and weight.

Breathability

A jacket can be completely waterproof and still be bad for running: if your sweat can't escape, you end up as wet inside as you would be without it. Breathability is given as MVTR (moisture vapor transmission rate), and higher is better. Above 20,000 g/m2/24h is excellent for running.

Hiking in sustained rain is a different job: you move slower, carry a pack and stay out for hours, so a heavier shell with a hood that fits over a cap makes sense. Our sister site WildProofLab compares rain jackets for hiking.

Weight and packability

You only benefit from a jacket you actually take with you. Shells under 8 oz can squash down to about the size of a fist and fit in a vest or belt. Insulated jackets have a place in winter; for the other three seasons, lighter is almost always better.

Fit

A running jacket should fit closer than a casual rain jacket, so it doesn't flap, but not so tight that it restricts your arm swing. Articulated sleeves, stretch panels and gusseted underarms help. If you will layer underneath, size up or pick a slightly relaxed cut.

The jackets

The old Norvan LT and AeroLayer slots now have Helium UL and BALEAF hybrid alternatives. Their cards identify the selected Medium variants and sellers. Marmot PreCip Eco retains its separate Black Large Amazon.com selection; none of the new replacements inherits a storm-test ranking.

Model and specification differences: Black Medium Helium UL replaces Arc’teryx Norvan LT. This is a 15D nylon ripstop waterproof shell with fully taped seams, not a verified Norvan GORE-TEX construction, breathability rating or weight equivalent.

The listing describes an adjustable wired-brim hood, chest-pocket packing and Aquaguard front zip; it is a rain shell, not an insulated layer.

2. Under Armour Storm Qualifier Packable Jacket: best value

Our previous value pick, the Nike Windrunner BRS, no longer has an Amazon listing, so this slot goes to the Under Armour Storm Qualifier Packable. Like the baleaf and Marmot selections, it has not been through our earlier wear testing: we chose it from live listings against the criteria above, and everything below is what Under Armour publishes about it.

It is made to be carried, not worn all run: it stuffs into its own pocket, so it comes with you when the forecast is uncertain. The UA Storm treatment is a water-repellent finish that sheds wind and light rain, and the listing shows reflective details for low light.

A water-repellent finish alone is not a waterproof membrane. We have not established directly comparable selected-garment weights for Storm Qualifier, Helium UL and the BALEAF hybrid, so the previous Norvan weight comparison does not apply.

3. Gore Wear R7 Partial Gore-Tex Infinium Jacket: best for mixed conditions

The R7 combines GORE-TEX INFINIUM wind-blocking panels with breathable stretch fabric. INFINIUM is not a waterproof rain membrane: choose this for wind and changeable conditions, not sustained rain.

The stretch fabric moves in a way fully waterproof shells rarely do; it feels more like a slightly heavier long-sleeve top than a rain jacket. If your runs often switch between rain and dry, it makes a lot of sense.

The uncovered areas will get wet in heavy rain. If you regularly run in downpours, get a fully waterproof jacket.

Marmot Men's PreCip Eco Rain Jacket — available replacement

The Marmot Men's PreCip Eco Rain Jacket is the available replacement. Marmot PreCip Eco replaces Patagonia Torrentshell 3L. This is NanoPro waterproof-breathable construction, not Patagonia H2No 3-layer; the old 13.9 oz weight and recycled-material claims do not transfer. The listing specifies NanoPro waterproof-breathable fabric, taped seams, pit zips, zippered hand pockets, adjustable cuffs and hem, and storage in its own pocket. It does not provide a numeric hydrostatic-head or breathability rating. Pit zips offer adjustable ventilation, but we have not wear-tested this selected jacket.

BALEAF Men's Hybrid Thermal Running Jacket — Medium — selected alternative

The BALEAF Men's Hybrid Thermal Running Jacket — Medium is a selected alternative to Nike AeroLayer Running Jacket. Selected variant: Dark Grey, Medium. Model and specification differences: Dark Grey Medium BALEAF hybrid thermal jacket replaces Nike AeroLayer. Its water-resistant front and stretch-fleece back/arms are not verified Nike AeroLayer synthetic fill or equivalent rain protection.

The listing describes a detachable hood, thumbholes, reflective rear stripe and zip pockets. Treat it as a thermal mid-layer/warm-up jacket, not a waterproof shell.

6. baleaf Packable Rain Jackets: best budget waterproof

Like the Storm Qualifier, these two were chosen from live listings in September 2026 rather than through wear testing, and everything here is what baleaf publishes. They are on this list because they are the cheapest way to get an actual membrane rather than a water-repellent finish.

The men's jacket lists a laminated TPU membrane rated at 5,000mm with 3,000g/m2/24hr breathability, a back vent, an attached hood, elastic cuffs, a drawcord hem, and reflective stripes, and it packs into its own back pocket. The women's jacket lists the same two ratings, fully sealed seams, back vents, a cord-adjustable hood, and a weight of about 285g.

Compare the baleaf listing’s 5,000 mm and 3,000 g/m²/24h figures with your needs: these are modest on-paper ratings for sustained rain and hard efforts. Marmot’s selected PreCip Eco lists taped NanoPro construction and pit zips but no comparable numeric ratings, so do not assign it a higher tested breathability score.

Looking after a running jacket

Washing

Follow the care label, which under the FTC's Care Labeling Rule has to warn you about any washing, bleaching or drying method that would damage the jacket. In general, wash on a gentle cold cycle with a technical wash. Regular detergent, fabric softener and bleach damage DWR and membranes. Hang dry, or tumble on low, which can help reactivate the DWR.

Restoring water repellency

DWR wears off. When water soaks into the outer fabric instead of beading, re-treat it with a spray-on or wash-in product such as Nikwax TX.Direct or Grangers Performance Repel, applied after washing and drying.

Storage

Hang it loosely or lay it flat. Long-term compression in a stuff sack can damage the membrane, so use the sack for carrying, not storage.

Only if you run in sustained rain. Waterproof jackets use a membrane rated 10,000mm or more and block rain for hours, which Pacific Northwest trail runners need. If you only meet the odd drizzle, a water-resistant DWR shell is lighter and cheaper; it sheds light rain but eventually wets through.
