Quick answer

For most reformer classes, buy the CRZ YOGA Butterluxe 25": a 7/8 length CRZ says sits above the ankle, a seamless high-rise waistband, and fabric the maker calls squat proof. Choose the CRZ No Front Seam version if a front seam bothers you in straddles, the SculptAir for sweatier classes, Colorfulkoala Dreamlux for a petite 25" length, and Jockey's cotton stretch legging if you prefer cotton.

The CRZ YOGA Butterluxe 25" is the legging most reformer students should buy: a 7/8 length that ends above the ankle, a seamless waistband with no hardware, and a fabric CRZ calls squat proof. If you're choosing for reformer specifically, the details below (inseam, seams, waistband and fabric) matter more than the brand.

We haven't tested these; the picks come from the makers' listings, CRZ YOGA's fabric guide and size chart, and the reformer basics we already cover.

What the reformer asks of a legging

A reformer class puts you on your back, on your knees and with your feet in straps on a moving carriage. That changes what you need from leggings in four ways.

Length comes first. Your feet press the foot bar and sit in the straps, and your grip socks have to grip. A 7/8 legging, usually a 25-inch inseam, ends above the ankle so the hem doesn't bunch over your sock. CRZ says its 25" Butterluxe is "7/8 length intended to sit above ankle", while its 28" is "full length intended to sit at ankle". If you're tall, the 28" may land where a 25" lands on everyone else.

Then the waistband. You spend half the class lying on your back, so anything at the back of the waist presses into your spine. Avoid drawstrings, zip pockets and metal trim. A wide, flat high-rise band also stays put when you roll up or lift your legs overhead.

Opacity matters because your legs are in the air for much of class. Only some makers state opacity: CRZ calls Butterluxe "squat proof", and Colorfulkoala says LYCRA BLACK stops grin-through in dark shades. Test any pair in bright light by bending over before class.

Last, seams. A center front seam is the one you notice in straddles, frog and feet-in-straps work. No-front-seam leggings remove it. Flat seams elsewhere matter less, but skip anything with hard trim that could catch on straps or scratch upholstery.

Studios rarely put this in writing. Club Pilates' FAQ asks only for "comfortable athletic wear that you can move in", plus grip socks for everyone. Our what to wear to Pilates class guide covers tops, hair and what damages a reformer; this page is about the leggings.

The five leggings

CRZ YOGA Butterluxe 25": the default pick

Butterluxe is CRZ's softest fabric, 81% polyamide and 19% Lycra per its fabric guide, which describes it as "ultra-soft, stretchy, and gently compressive". The listing gives it a seamless waistband and calls it squat proof. The 25-inch inseam is the 7/8 length that clears the ankle.

CRZ files Butterluxe under "Yoga · Low-Impact Workouts · Daily Wear", and Pilates sits well inside that. If you want firmer hold, CRZ's Butterlift is 74% polyamide and 26% Lycra and lists Pilates by name; our Butterluxe vs Butterlift comparison explains how the two differ. The Butterlift 25" is on Amazon from CRZ's own store.

CRZ YOGA No Front Seam 25": the same legging, minus one seam

This is Butterluxe fabric in the same 7/8 length, cut without the center front seam. CRZ's listing says "No front seam design. No camel toe". If your current leggings bother you in straddles or frog on the carriage, this is the direct fix. Its listing doesn't repeat the squat-proof claim, so check opacity in bright light when it arrives.

CRZ YOGA SculptAir No Front Seam 25": for sweatier classes

SculptAir is CRZ's newer fabric, described as "breathable and sweat-wicking" with "long lasting support and compression". The listing also calls it "abrasion-resistant for long-lasting wear", which is relevant when you kneel and slide on vinyl. It has no front seam. Choose it over Butterluxe if your studio runs warm or your classes mix reformer with strength work. CRZ's fabric guide doesn't list its fiber content yet.

Colorfulkoala Dreamlux No Front Seam 25": the petite option

Colorfulkoala lists this legging for "yoga, pilates, lounging, and light-impact workouts", with a no-front-seam cut and a high-rise, no-seam waistband. The maker gives the 25-inch inseam as its petite length, for heights under 5'4". On a petite frame it will sit at the ankle rather than above it. The listing says LYCRA BLACK technology stops grin-through in dark shades, one of the clearer opacity claims here.

Jockey Cotton Stretch Ankle Legging: if you want cotton

Every other pick is a nylon (polyamide) and spandex blend. Jockey's is cotton and spandex jersey with a wide high-rise elastic waistband and a gusset with a moisture-wicking liner. It's a 28-inch full length, so it can stack at the ankle on shorter legs. The side pockets have flatlock seams but still add a layer at the hip when you lie on your side.

Nylon blend or cotton

The makers' own descriptions show the trade-off. CRZ describes its polyamide blends as four-way stretch "with shape retention", and the SculptAir as "holding shape without feeling restrictive". Jockey's cotton legging makes softness and moisture-wicking claims but none about holding its shape.

For regular reformer classes, a nylon-spandex blend is the safer choice, since that is where the makers put their stretch and recovery claims. Pick cotton if synthetics irritate your skin or you only do gentle classes.

Sizing: use the chart, and both numbers

CRZ's size guide sizes its bottoms by waist and hip:

CRZ size Waist Hip
XXS 23.0" 33.5"
XS 24.4" 35.0"
S 26.6" 37.0"
M 28.5" 39.0"
L 30.5" 41.0"
XL 32.5" 43.0"

CRZ says to measure directly on your body: the waist at the narrowest point between ribs and hips, and the hips at the widest point with your feet together. Its inseam is measured "from crotch to ankle bone", so you can check whether a 25" will sit above your ankle before you order. If your waist and hip land in different sizes, the high-rise waistband is the part that has to stay put on a reformer, so size for a band that doesn't roll. Our activewear sizing table collects fit notes across brands.

Keeping them in shape

Leggings that lose their stretch stop being opaque, so follow each pair's care label. Our guide to washing leggings covers the routine and how to fix pilling.

The rest of the outfit

Grip socks are required at most reformer studios; our grip sock guide compares toe styles. For a one-piece instead of leggings and a top, see our Pilates bodysuits and unitards. Up top, a longline bra that stays down in a bridge works best; our sports bras for yoga and Pilates covers fit. If your hands slip on the straps or foot bar, Pilates grip gloves are the next thing to try.

Frequently Asked Questions

What length leggings are best for reformer Pilates?

A 7/8 length, usually a 25-inch inseam, for most heights. It ends above the ankle so the hem stays off your grip socks. CRZ says its 25" sits above the ankle and its 28" at the ankle, so tall students may want the 28".

Are no-front-seam leggings better for Pilates?

For many people, yes. The center front seam is the one you feel in straddles, frog and feet-in-straps work. CRZ and Colorfulkoala both make 25" leggings without it.

Can I wear cotton leggings to reformer Pilates?

Yes. Cotton and spandex is comfortable, but the stretch and shape-retention claims in this category are made for nylon-spandex blends. If you sweat a lot or want the leggings to hold their shape, choose a blend.

Should Pilates leggings have pockets?

Flat side pockets are fine. Avoid zip pockets and anything with metal hardware at the back of the waistband, because you lie on it and zips can scratch the upholstery.
