Quick answer

The Manduka PRO and PROlite are the same dense, closed-cell PVC mat in two builds. The PRO is 6mm, 71 by 26 inches and 7.5 pounds ($144); the PROlite is 4.7mm, 71 by 24 inches and 4.6 pounds ($112 list). Buy the PRO if the mat lives at home and you want more cushion under knees and wrists; buy the PROlite if you carry it to class or prefer a firmer feel for balance poses.

Best OverallManduka PRO Yoga Mat 6mm$144.00

The most durable mat you can buy, and the one we would choose if we could only own one.

  2. 2

The PRO for people who carry their mat: the same material, lighter and firmer, chosen from Manduka's specifications rather than wear testing.

The Manduka PRO is one of the most recommended yoga mats there is, and the PROlite is its lighter sibling. They are made from the same material, sold side by side, and about $30 apart. The question is not which is better; it is which build suits how you practise and how you get to class.

What Is the Same

Almost everything that makes a PRO a PRO. Both are made from the same ultra-dense, closed-cell PVC, which seals out sweat so the mat stays hygienic and does not absorb odour. Both have a dot-pattern underside that keeps them from sliding on the floor. Both are latex-free, which matters if you react to natural rubber mats like the Jade Harmony. And both are cleaned the same way: Manduka recommends its own Mat Wash and Refresh and advises against other cleaners.

The closed-cell surface also means both start slick. On the PRO we tested, a coarse salt scrub and a few weeks of practice brought out a matte grip that kept improving. Our cleaning guide explains why that scrub works on PVC but must never be used on rubber.

What Is Different

Cushion: 6mm vs 4.7mm

Our thickness guide recommends 4.5 to 6mm of dense material for most people, so both mats sit in the right range. The difference shows up in kneeling and seated poses. The PRO's PVC is dense enough that a foot in tree pose barely compresses it while a kneecap in table top sinks just enough to take the pressure off. That is why the PRO is our pick for sensitive knees and wrists.

At 4.7mm the PROlite is closer to the standard thickness most quality mats use, the same as the Jade Harmony. You feel the floor a little more under your knees, and you get a slightly firmer, more direct connection in standing balance work.

Weight and size: the real deciding factor

The PRO weighs 7.5 pounds. In our best yoga mats review we called it a chore to carry to class, and it is a mat that lives at home or in a studio locker. The PROlite is listed at 4.6 pounds, almost 3 pounds lighter, and two inches narrower, which Manduka pitches for smaller spaces and tight class settings.

If you walk or cycle to class several times a week, those 3 pounds matter more than the 1.3mm.

Price

The PRO was $144 in most colours when we checked in September 2026. The PROlite lists at $112 and was $99.99 in one colour. For the price gap, you get the extra cushion and width.

Which Should You Buy?

Buy the PRO if:

  • The mat stays at home or in a locker.
  • Your knees or wrists complain on thinner mats.
  • You want the one mat we would choose if we could only own one, backed by Manduka's lifetime guarantee.

Buy the PROlite if:

  • You carry your mat to class.
  • You prefer a firmer surface for balance-heavy practice.
  • Your studio packs mats close together.

If you practise both at home and in a studio, some people own a PRO for home and something much lighter for travel; our travel mats guide covers folding mats under 3 pounds.

How We Compared

We have used the Manduka PRO for years, and what we say about its cushion, break-in and weight comes from our best yoga mats review and thickness guide. We have not wear-tested the PROlite; its specifications come from Manduka's Amazon listing, checked in September 2026 along with the prices and sellers above.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Manduka PRO and PROlite?

Thickness, size and weight. The PRO is 6mm, 71 by 26 inches and 7.5 pounds; the PROlite is 4.7mm, 71 by 24 inches and 4.6 pounds. The material is the same dense, closed-cell PVC.

Is the Manduka PROlite good for bad knees?

It works for many people, but the 6mm PRO is the better choice if your knees are sensitive. Our bad knees mat guide explains why a dense 6mm mat protects a kneecap better than thinner or softer ones.

Is the Manduka PRO too heavy?

For carrying to class, many people find it so: it weighs 7.5 pounds. As a home mat, the weight is part of why it lies flat and stays put.

Do the PRO and PROlite need breaking in?

Yes. Both have a closed-cell PVC surface that is slick when new. A coarse salt scrub and a few weeks of practice bring out the grip.

Which is better for hot yoga?

Neither is ideal on its own: closed-cell PVC gets slippery with heavy sweat. Add a grip towel or look at the mats in our hot yoga mats guide.

The Bottom Line

Same mat, two builds. The Manduka PRO is the home mat with more cushion and a lifetime of use; the PROlite is the one you carry. Choose on weight first and cushion second.
