Lululemon's Reset: What the Guidance Cut, New CEO, and Overflowing Markdowns Mean for Shoppers

On September 3 the company reported second-quarter comparable sales down 9 percent (12 percent in the Americas), cut its full-year revenue outlook for the second time this year to between $10.35 billion and $10.5 billion, and saw its shares fall roughly a fifth. Its new chief executive, Heidi O'Neill, a former Nike executive, was due to start the following week. Store expansion has been pulled back. And the "We Made Too Much" clearance section, according to the deal sites that track it daily, is the fullest it has been in years, with fall pieces already landing there.

What went wrong

Three things, and each makes the others worse.

Demand shifted. The company told investors that customers are moving from form-fitting leggings to looser, "away-from-body" pants. Lululemon makes those, but its stock and its identity are still built around leggings. We cover the trend in the loose-fit shift.

Stock piled up. When demand slows across a broad range, markdowns follow. That is the "We Made Too Much" overflow, and it is the part that matters to you.

What happens to prices this fall

Expect deeper, more frequent markdowns on the website, especially in seasonal colours and in the categories the company over-bought: leggings, bras and lightweight layers. Core styles in core colours are unlikely to be discounted; the Align in black is rarely marked down. And a new CEO usually edits the range within two or three seasons, which is when discontinued lines go to clearance in bulk.

So: buy core pieces in core colours when you need them, and everything else on sale.

Wunder Train: buy whatever colour is marked down

The Wunder Train is the best technical training tight from either Lululemon or Alo. It turns up in clearance constantly because it comes in so many colours each season, and the fabric and fit never change.

Energy Bra: wait for the sale section

The Energy Bra is a dependable medium-support bra that shows up in the sale section often. Third-party sellers on Amazon charge more than the Lululemon site, so buy this one from the site.

ABC Jogger: the men's pant to watch

The ABC Jogger is exactly the kind of looser pant the company is pushing on the men's side. It's a core style; buy it in navy or black in the holiday sale.

Analysts expect her to fight on several fronts at once: fix the product cadence, tighten the range and repair North America, where sales had stalled before she arrived.
