The fit is regular, wider at the body with a straight silhouette, so size down if you like a trimmer look. The women's Tiro 25 shares the fabric, collar and cuffs in a women's cut. Both list at about $50 and are sold by Amazon.com.

2. adidas 3-Stripes Tricot Track Top — Best Classic Look

For the smooth tricot and wide 3-Stripes that most people picture when they hear "track jacket", the men's 3-Stripes Tricot is the pick. It has front pockets, a stand-up collar and a regular fit, and it comes in tall sizes designed for men 6'2" and up. The women's Tricot 3-Stripes adds zip pockets and elastic cuffs and hem. Neither lists a moisture-management fabric, so treat them as sportswear rather than training layers. Both list at $55 and were selling well below that in several colours when we checked.

3. Under Armour Sportstyle Tricot Jacket — Warmest

Under Armour's Sportstyle Tricot pairs a smooth tricot exterior with a brushed interior for warmth, and the listing says the material wicks sweat and dries fast. It is the one to reach for on cool mornings and in cold gyms. The pockets are open hand pockets rather than zipped, which matters if you keep keys or a phone in your jacket. It lists at $60.

4. Under Armour Rival Woven Windbreaker — Best for Wind and Drizzle

The Rival Woven Windbreaker is a different kind of jacket: a lightweight woven shell with UA Storm water repellency, wind-resistant construction and a full mesh lining for breathability. It has zip hand pockets and encased elastic cuffs. If your warm-up happens outdoors, this is the jacket here that will cope with wind and a passing shower. It lists at $65.

How to Choose a Track Jacket

• Decide what the jacket is for. Warm-ups and training favour moisture-managing fabric like AEROREADY; everyday wear favours tricot; outdoor warm-ups in wind favour a woven shell.
