## Key takeaways

- On the Tavi and ToeSox chart, men's 7 to 9 is a Medium, 9.5 to 11.5 a Large and 12 to 13.5 an XL.
- ToeSox says to size up if you're on the cusp between two sizes.
- Tucketts' L/XL fits men's US 9 and up; there is no larger toeless size.
- Gaiam's own site and its Amazon listing give different men's sizes for the same sock, so we left it out.
- Club Pilates and Pure Barre ask every client to wear grip socks, men included.

## Products reviewed

   - Cons: Regular closed toe, so no toe separation; Low-rise cut leaves the ankle bare; Base 33 sells a crew version for more cover

   - Cons: No grip under the bare toe tips; Marketed to women, so check the chart rather than the label
4. **Tucketts Toeless Grip Socks, Anklet (L/XL)** (details: https://flexwearlab.com/yoga-pilates/mens-grip-socks-pilates#product-B07CZTHJSW) — Buy it if toe sleeves pinch or you want your whole forefoot bare.
   - Pros: Tucketts lists a charcoal Anklet in L/XL in its men's collection; Open toe with a toe-separator stitch that the listing says keeps it anchored; 70% recycled cotton, 29% nylon, 1% spandex, with arch cushioning
   - Cons: One size for every man from US 9 up, so very large feet may find it tight; No grip or cover under the toes

Men can wear most "women's" grip socks: Tavi and ToeSox publish one chart with men's sizes on it, where a men's US 9.5 to 11.5 is a Large and 12 to 13.5 an XL. If you're a man heading to reformer, mat Pilates or barre, start with Tavi's men's line, Base 33, and pick your size from that chart.

We haven't tested these; the picks come from the makers' size charts, product pages and listings, and we've linked each source. For the women's-sizes roundup, see our [grip socks guide](https://flexwearlab.com/yoga-pilates/best-grip-socks-pilates-barre).

## Sizes that fit men's feet

Grip sock sizing is by shoe size, and the labels are often misleading. ToeSox and Tavi listings say "for women" in the title, but both brands publish the same chart with a men's row. From [Tavi's size guide](https://www.taviactive.com/pages/size-guide):

| Sock size | Men's US shoe | Women's US shoe |
| --- | --- | --- |
| S | 4.5 to 6.5 | 6 to 8 |
| M | 7 to 9 | 8.5 to 10.5 |
| L | 9.5 to 11.5 | 11 to 13 |
| XL | 12 to 13.5 | 13.5 to 15 |

The [ToeSox size chart](https://www.toesox.com/pages/size-guide) matches it exactly, and the [ToeSox FAQ](https://www.toesox.com/pages/faq) adds one rule: "If you're on the cusp on the size chart, we recommend sizing up." A men's 9 or 9.5, then, is a Large, and a men's 11.5 or 12 an XL.

Other brands are less precise. The [Tucketts FAQ](https://tucketts.com/pages/faq) says its L/XL "fits Men and Women's US Size 9+", which is one size for every man from a 9 up. Pointe Studio's [FAQ](https://pointestudio.com/pages/faq) lists a men's Large/X-Large for sizes 9 to 11.

Gaiam is the confusing one. Its own product page for the Grippy Yoga Socks on [gaiam.com](https://www.gaiam.com/products/no-slip-yoga-socks) says the men's M/L fits sizes 10 to 12, but the Amazon listing for the Medium/Large says men's 4 to 9. With two different answers for the same sock, we left Gaiam off the list for men.

None of the brands we checked list a men's size above 13.5. Men with bigger feet are down to stretch and luck.

## The picks, by toe style

### Base 33 Low Rise: a regular sock built for men

Base 33 sits in the men's section of [Tavi's site](https://www.taviactive.com/collections/men-socks), in S to XL, and it is the only line here that's made for men rather than sized to include them. Tavi describes the Low Rise as built with "quick-dry yarn and vented panels", with "non-slip hex grip technology and compression arch support." The Amazon listing gives the fabric as 70% organic cotton.

It is a regular closed-toe sock, so it goes on like any athletic sock and puts grip under your toes. That makes it the right first pair for most men: nothing to get used to, and a Large or XL on the Tavi chart. Base 33 also makes a crew-height version if you prefer more coverage over the ankle.

### ToeSox full toe and half toe: separated toes

ToeSox makes five-toe socks, and its listings for the Ankle Full Toe call them "socks for men and women." Its [Why Five page](https://www.toesox.com/pages/why-five) says the five-toe design means the sock stays "anchored in place with no bunching or twisting."

The full-toe Ankle sock keeps each toe covered. The Bellarina Half Toe cuts the sleeves short so your toe tips touch the carriage or floor, which ToeSox's half-toe listings describe as an "almost barefoot experience." Both are on the same chart as Tavi, so the Large covers men's 9.5 to 11.5.

The catch with any five-toe sock is fit at the toes. ToeSox's FAQ says "no toe is created equal": some feet have long toes, some short. If your toes are long or unusually spaced, a toeless sock avoids the problem.

### Tucketts Anklet L/XL: toeless

Tucketts lists a charcoal Anklet in L/XL in its men's collection. It is fully toeless: the sock covers the heel, arch and ball, and a toe-separator stitch holds it in place, according to the listing. Tucketts' [FAQ](https://tucketts.com/pages/faq) says the toeless design is meant to "retain the benefits of being barefoot while adding an extra layer of protection, comfort, and stability."

It solves the toe-sleeve problem completely, and there is nothing to wrestle on after a sweaty class. The trade-off is one size for every man from US 9 up, and no grip under the toes. Our [toe style comparison](https://flexwearlab.com/yoga-pilates/grip-socks-toe-styles-compared) goes through all four styles in more detail.

## Grip patterns: what to look for

Every brand describes its grip differently. Tavi calls its pattern a "patented triangle grip," Base 33 uses a "hex grip," ToeSox has a "patented non-slip grip sole," and Tucketts uses what its FAQ calls "gripper drops," shaped for "light stimulation of the nerve endings in the soles."

The names matter less than where the grip sits. In footwork on the reformer, your heel and the ball of your foot press into the foot bar; in barre, the ball of the foot carries you in relevé. Look at the sole in the listing photos and make sure grip covers both areas, not just a few dots in the middle.

## Do men really need them?

If your studio says so, yes. The [Club Pilates FAQ](https://www.clubpilates.com/faq) answers "Do I need grip socks?" with "Yes - bring your own or purchase some from our retail boutique." Pure Barre's [first-timer page](https://www.purebarre.com/new-to-barre) asks for "a pair of sticky socks (grip socks) to prevent your feet from sliding in class and for studio hygiene."

Neither rule depends on who's wearing them, and neither names a toe style, so any of the socks above qualifies. Smaller studios set their own rules; check before you book.

If you're new to class, our guide to [what to wear to Pilates](https://flexwearlab.com/blog/what-to-wear-to-pilates-class) covers shorts and tops, and the [Pilates-strength class guide](https://flexwearlab.com/blog/pilates-overtakes-yoga-what-to-wear-hybrid-class) covers the hybrid format many studios now run. For care, our [grip sock washing guide](https://flexwearlab.com/blog/how-to-wash-grip-socks) lists each maker's instructions; Tavi's for Base 33 are to wash inside out on a gentle cycle and line dry or use low heat.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What size grip socks should a man with US size 11 shoes buy?

A Large on the Tavi and ToeSox chart, which covers men's 9.5 to 11.5. At 11.5, ToeSox's advice to size up on the cusp points to an XL.

### Can men wear women's grip socks?

Yes, if you size by the chart instead of the label. Tavi and ToeSox list men's shoe sizes on the same chart as women's, and Tavi's Amazon listings describe its socks as for women "(and men)".

### Do men need grip socks for reformer Pilates?

At most studios, yes. Club Pilates says grip socks are required, and Pure Barre asks for them to stop feet sliding and for hygiene.

### Are there grip socks for men's size 14?

None of the makers we checked list one. Tavi and ToeSox top out at men's 13.5, and the Tucketts L/XL is a single size for men's 9 and up.
