## Quick answer

A thick mat, loop bands, a 9-inch ball, a magic circle and a pair of sliders cover a full mat Pilates class at home. Buy the ProsourceFit 1/2-inch mat and Fit Simplify bands first, then a 14-inch magic circle with about 30 lb of resistance.

## Key takeaways

- Five small props cover a full mat Pilates class at home: thick mat, loop bands, 9-inch ball, magic circle and sliders.
- Buy the ProsourceFit 1/2-inch mat and Fit Simplify bands first; together they cover most beginner exercises.
- Choose a 14-inch magic circle with about 30 lb of resistance; a stiffer ring makes you squeeze with your neck.
- Inflate the 9-inch ball to 70 to 80 percent so it molds under the sacrum and between the knees.
- Skip Pilates bar kits; they don't replicate a reformer, and the five props above do more for mat work.

Buy a thick mat and a set of loop bands first, then a 14-inch magic circle, a 9-inch ball and a pair of sliders: those five props cover a full mat Pilates class at home without a reformer. The picks below, one per prop, and the three-day routine that uses them are for people who already take classes or follow videos and want the same tools at home.

**Availability checked October 19, 2026.** The replacements below are selected from listing details, not our earlier wear tests. Stock applies only to the linked color and size; check your own size, current seller and return terms.

You don't strictly need any of it. The 34 exercises in Joseph Pilates' 1945 book *Return to Life* use only the floor. Props do one of two jobs: they give you feedback so you feel the right muscle working, or they add resistance so an exercise stays hard as you get stronger. We tested more than two dozen props over the past year, from bargain multi-packs to studio-branded kit, and the retained tested models remain below alongside a new, untested Mr. Pen slider replacement. If you are brand new to the method, start with our [Pilates at home beginner guide](https://flexwearlab.com/blog/pilates-at-home-beginner-guide).

## What separated the keepers

Pilates props are cheap and the listings are full of near-identical products, so small details decide it. We used the earlier tested props at least three times a week for three months; the new Mr. Pen sliders were not included. Rings that warped, bands that tore and balls that wouldn't hold air were out. The former sliders were tried on hardwood, tile and low-pile carpet; those results do not transfer to Mr. Pen, and balls and rings on a sweaty mat. A ring that is too stiff or a ball that is too firm stops giving useful feedback, which defeats the point. Everything below fits in one mat bag or a small basket.

## The five props

### 1. ProBody Pilates Circle 14-Inch Magic Circle

The magic circle (fitness circle, Pilates ring) is the most Pilates-specific thing here. Squeezed between the ankles or knees, it switches on the inner thighs and pelvic floor during bridges, the hundred and roll-ups. Held between the hands, it works the chest and arms and gives your shoulders something to stabilize against in ab work. Pressed against the outside of one thigh, it resists hip abduction.

The ProBody gets the details right. Fourteen inches is the standard size and fits between most people's knees without forcing the hips wide. Resistance is around 30 lb: enough to feel, not so much that you brace your neck to close it. There are foam pads inside and outside the ring, so it is comfortable whichever way you hold it. The fiberglass core is what you are paying for. After three months of use at least three times a week it still springs back to a true circle, while the [URBNFit ring](https://flexwearlab.com/yoga-pilates/best-pilates-equipment-home) we tested alongside it developed a slight flat spot. It comes with a pouch and a basic exercise sheet.

If you buy one prop to make home mat work feel like a studio class, make it this.

### 2. ProBody Pilates Ball 9-Inch Small Exercise Ball

This is not the 65 cm ball people sit on at a desk. The small ball goes under your sacrum for pelvic tilts and leg lowers, between your knees to switch on the adductors, under one hand in a plank for instability, or behind your low back in seated roll-downs to give you something to curl into. Barre and mat instructors reach for it constantly because it makes deep core work easy to feel.

The ProBody ball is anti-burst PVC with a matte finish that stays put on a mat, and it is latex-free, which matters for something that sits against bare skin. It inflates through the included straw in about 45 seconds. How much you inflate it matters more than people expect. Firm, it is harder to balance on and better for planks. Slightly soft, it molds around the sacrum for pelvic work and is kinder between the knees. We keep ours at about 80 percent.

It is the one to get for core and pelvic floor work, and for barre-style or physical therapy programs.

### 3. Fit Simplify Resistance Loop Exercise Bands, Set of 5

Loop bands load the side-lying series, clamshells, glute bridges and standing leg work, and they add resistance to arm exercises that are otherwise bodyweight-only on the mat. With five levels you can use a light band for shoulder rotations, a medium one for clamshells and a heavy one for bridges and monster walks in the same session. Our [resistance band exercises for beginners](https://flexwearlab.com/blog/resistance-band-exercises-for-beginners) has twelve moves and a 20-minute routine.

The 12-inch loops are the right length for Pilates, the latex is thick, and the seams held through three months of heavy stretching. A carry bag and booklet come with it. The drawback is that latex rolls up on bare skin, so if you practice in shorts, wear leggings or buy fabric bands; the [Black Mountain 5-band set](https://flexwearlab.com/yoga-pilates/best-pilates-equipment-home) is a good fabric option. For longer flat bands that double as yoga straps, see our [yoga blocks, straps, and props guide](https://flexwearlab.com/yoga-pilates/best-yoga-blocks-straps-props).

### Mr. Pen Dual-Sided Core Sliders, 2-Pack — available replacement

The [Mr. Pen Dual-Sided Core Sliders, 2-Pack](https://flexwearlab.com/yoga-pilates/best-pilates-equipment-home#product-B09KM8S7T4) is the available replacement. Mr. Pen replaces Black Mountain. The pair is described as 7 inches in diameter, with ABS plastic and a soft fabric/EVA side; the old brand durability findings do not apply. Dimension fields also show 3.5-inch width, so confirm the physical size if fit is critical. The listing directs the hard plastic side onto carpet or turf and the soft fabric side onto hard floors. Test on a clean inconspicuous spot first, keep grit off both surfaces and avoid treating slides as a substitute for a reformer's springs or carriage.

### 5. ProsourceFit Extra Thick 1/2-Inch Yoga and Pilates Mat

Mat Pilates has a lot of rolling: rolling like a ball, open leg rocker, seal and the rollover series. On a hard floor a standard 4 mm or 5 mm yoga mat is too thin for that, and your spine and tailbone pay for it. Studio Pilates mats are usually 10 mm to 15 mm, and the ProsourceFit at half an inch (13 mm) sits in that range.

The NBR foam is dense and cushions the spine well, and at 71 by 24 inches it is long enough for full rollovers. The ribbed surface grips a hardwood floor, and it comes with a carrying strap. It smells of foam for a couple of days out of the box, which is normal for NBR. The same thickness makes it wrong for standing balances, so if you also do yoga, keep a thin mat for that. Our [yoga mat thickness guide](https://flexwearlab.com/yoga-pilates/yoga-mat-thickness-guide) explains the trade-off, and [how to clean a yoga mat](https://flexwearlab.com/blog/how-to-clean-yoga-mat) covers foam care.

If you practice on a hard floor, this is the first thing to buy.

## A Pilates bar kit is not a reformer

A bar kit is a padded bar with resistance bands clipped to foot loops, sold as a portable reformer. It mostly lets you do squats, rows and standing presses against band tension. That is fine general strength work, but there is no carriage, no straps and no spring feel. You can [browse Pilates bar kits on Amazon](https://flexwearlab.com/yoga-pilates/best-pilates-equipment-home), but we would buy the five props above first, and if you want the real reformer experience, save for one: see our [home reformer guide](https://flexwearlab.com/yoga-pilates/best-pilates-reformers-home-2026).

## What to buy first

| Item | Our pick | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Thick mat | ProsourceFit 1/2-inch | Buy first |
| Loop bands | Fit Simplify set of 5 | Buy first |
| Small ball | ProBody 9-inch | Buy second |
| Magic circle | ProBody 14-inch | Buy second |
| Core sliders | Mr. Pen Dual-Sided Core Sliders, 2-Pack | Buy third |

The mat and bands alone cover most beginner exercises. Add the ball and ring once you have a routine, and the sliders when you want reformer-style leg work. If you practice on a bare floor, add grip socks; our [grip sock guide](https://flexwearlab.com/yoga-pilates/best-grip-socks-pilates-barre) has budget options.

| Prop | Main purpose | Resistance or feedback | Storage | Works on carpet? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Magic circle | Inner thigh, pelvic floor, chest, arms | ~30 lb resistance | Hangs on a hook | Yes |
| 9-inch ball | Core activation, pelvic tilts, instability | Feedback, light instability | Deflates flat | Yes |
| Loop bands | Glutes, hips, shoulders | 5 graded levels | Small pouch | Yes |
| Core sliders | Leg and core, reformer-style movement | Bodyweight and friction | Flat in a drawer | Yes, hard side |
| Thick mat | Cushion for rolling and spine work | None | Rolls with strap | Yes |

## A three-day routine using all five

Three sessions of 25 to 35 minutes a week. Do each exercise for 8 to 12 slow, controlled reps unless noted.

**Day 1: Core and ring.** Hundred with the ball between the knees. Roll-up holding the ring overhead. Single-leg stretch and double-leg stretch. Bridge with the ring between the knees, squeezing on the lift. Side-lying leg lifts with the ring outside the top ankle. Finish with the ball under the sacrum for slow leg lowers.

**Day 2: Glutes and bands.** Clamshells with a medium band, 15 reps per side. Glute bridge with a heavy band above the knees. Side-lying series with a light band around the ankles. Standing side steps and monster walks with a medium band. Seated band rows and external rotations with a light band.

**Day 3: Sliders and full body.** Slider reverse lunges, 10 per leg. Slider pikes from plank, 8 to 10. Slider hamstring curls on the back, 10 to 12. Mountain climbers with sliders, 30 seconds. Rolling like a ball and open leg rocker on the thick mat. Finish with a ring chest squeeze series lying down.

On rest days, five minutes of pelvic tilts on the ball and a few roll-downs keep the spine moving. The four-week progression that builds on this is in the [beginner guide](https://flexwearlab.com/blog/pilates-at-home-beginner-guide).

## Four ways people get this wrong

Buying the big ball. A 55 to 75 cm stability ball is good for seated work and back extensions, but it is not what an instructor means by "grab a ball." Get the 9-inch.

Buying the stiffest ring. A ring you can barely close makes you recruit your neck and jaw, the opposite of what Pilates teaches. Around 30 lb suits most people.

Rolling on a thin mat. People try rolling exercises on a yoga mat, bruise their tailbone and decide Pilates is uncomfortable. It was the mat.

Using sliders on a foam mat. They won't glide. Move the mat aside and slide on the floor or a low carpet.

If you only do reformer classes and never mat work, skip the sliders and the thick mat. If you have a latex allergy, buy fabric bands instead of the Fit Simplify set; [MedlinePlus](https://medlineplus.gov/latexallergy.html) notes that repeated exposure to the protein in natural latex can make an allergy more likely.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Do I really need any equipment for mat Pilates?

No. The original mat sequence uses only the floor. Props add feedback and resistance and keep the work hard as you progress. The one thing we would call essential is a thick mat if you practice on a hard floor.

### What size Pilates ring should I buy?

Fourteen inches, the standard. A 12-inch ring suits petite people or narrow hips; 15-inch rings are uncommon and mainly useful for taller people holding them between the hands.

### How inflated should the 9-inch ball be?

About 70 to 80 percent for most Pilates work, so it gives noticeably when you press it. Fully firm is only useful when you are balancing a hand on it.

### Can I use yoga blocks and straps for Pilates?

Yes. A block between the knees stands in for the ring in many exercises, and a yoga strap does the job of a long flat band for hamstring and foot-in-strap work. See our [yoga blocks, straps, and props guide](https://flexwearlab.com/yoga-pilates/best-yoga-blocks-straps-props).

### How thick should a Pilates mat be?

At least 10 mm on a hard floor, and half an inch (13 mm) is the sweet spot. Past about 20 mm it gets unstable for kneeling and standing work.
