## Key takeaways

- Inside out and a gentle cycle is the one instruction Tavi, ToeSox and Pointe Studio all give.
- Air drying, on a line or flat, is allowed by every maker we checked; low heat is the most any of them permit, and some ask you to lay the socks flat.
- No bleach and no iron, from every brand.
- Socks often have no sewn-in care label, so keep the packaging card: that is where the maker's instructions are.
- Pointe Studio says a pair typically lasts six months to a year or longer, and rotating pairs extends that.

## Products reviewed

1. **Muchfun Honeycomb Mesh Laundry Bags (3-pack, 12 x 16 in)** (details: https://flexwearlab.com/blog/how-to-wash-grip-socks#product-B083SCJ8G8) — Buy it if your grip socks keep losing their partners in the wash.
   - Pros: Zippered honeycomb mesh bags, three per pack, sized 12 by 16 inches per the listing; Zipper has an auto-lock so the bag stays shut through the cycle; One bag holds a week of grip socks, so pairs don't scatter through the load
   - Cons: No grip sock maker we checked asks for a bag; it's a convenience, not a care requirement

Wash grip socks inside out on a gentle cycle and air dry them; that's the instruction Tavi, ToeSox and Pointe Studio all give, and low heat is the most any maker we checked allows in the dryer. Below is each brand's care rule side by side, for anyone who wears grip socks to reformer, barre or mat class and wants the grip to outlast the fabric.

We haven't run a wash test on these socks. Everything here comes from the makers' own care instructions, linked where we quote them.

## What each maker says

| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Tavi | Machine washable, inside out, gentle cycle | Line dry or low heat in the dryer | Bleach, iron |
| ToeSox | Inside out, gentle cycle | Line dry or low heat in the dryer | Bleach, iron |
| Tucketts | Hand wash, or machine wash on a gentle cycle | Dry flat after hand washing; low heat after machine washing | Not stated |
| Gaiam (Grippy Yoga Socks) | Machine wash | Air dry | Not stated |
| Gaiam (Yoga-Barre and toeless styles) | Cold, gentle cycle, mild detergent, with similar colors | Lay flat (barre), tumble dry low (toeless) | Bleach, iron |

Two things stand out. Nobody tells you to use hot water, and nobody allows high heat. The differences are in how cautious each brand is about the dryer: Tavi, ToeSox, Tucketts and Gaiam's toeless style allow low heat, while Pointe Studio and Gaiam's barre sock want them flat and out of the machine entirely.

The labels don't always agree within a brand, either. The ToeSox FAQ says grip socks should be line dried or put on low heat, and the Amazon listing for the ToeSox Bellarina says "tumble dry low". Both rule out high heat, so if you follow the stricter of the two, you're covered.

## A routine that satisfies every label

1. Turn them inside out. Tavi, ToeSox and Pointe Studio all ask for this.
2. Use the gentle cycle. Every brand above that names a cycle names the gentle one. Gaiam and Pointe Studio specify cold water, and no maker asks for warm or hot.
3. Pick a mild detergent and skip the bleach. Gaiam asks for a mild detergent, and Tavi, ToeSox, Pointe Studio and two of Gaiam's three styles say no bleach.
4. Line dry, or lay them flat. That satisfies every maker on the list. If you need them dry for tomorrow's class, low heat is the ceiling for the brands that allow a dryer at all.
5. Don't iron them. Every maker that lists an iron rule says no.

## Why the dryer is the step to watch

Pointe Studio is the only maker that explains its drying rule. Its FAQ says to "machine wash cold and air dry to maintain elasticity and grip strength", and that high heat "can shorten their lifespan." The other brands don't give a reason, but none of them allow more than low heat, which points the same way.

So the practical rule: if you are going to break a care instruction, don't make it this one. A pair that goes through a hot dryer cycle by accident is not ruined, but no maker designs for it.

## Fabric softener

None of the grip sock care instructions we read mention fabric softener, for or against. Gaiam's instruction to use a "mild detergent" is the closest any of them come to saying what to add to the wash.

What we do know is what's in the socks. Tavi, ToeSox and Tucketts blend cotton with nylon or polyester and a little elastane or spandex, and Gaiam's Grippy Yoga Socks are 95% polyester and 5% spandex: the same stretch fibers as leggings. Our [leggings washing guide](https://flexwearlab.com/blog/how-to-wash-leggings) explains why we leave softener and dryer sheets out of activewear loads. If you want to be safe with the grip, leave it out of the sock load too; nothing on any maker's label asks for it.

## Keep the packaging card

Under the FTC's [Care Labeling Rule](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/clothes-captioning-complying-care-labeling-rule), hosiery, which includes anklets, is exempt from needing a permanent sewn-in care label. The care instructions still have to appear somewhere, usually on the hang tag or packaging.

That's why a new pair of grip socks often has no label inside. Keep the card, or take a photo of the back of it, and if you buy a brand not covered above, follow whatever it says. The same rule requires a label to warn you with "Do not" or "Only" when a normal care step would harm the product, so a "Do not tumble dry" on the card is a real warning, not a formality.

## Is a mesh laundry bag worth it?

Not for the grip. No grip sock maker we checked asks for one, and Tavi and ToeSox say plainly that the socks are machine washable.

A bag earns its place for a different reason: grip socks are small, often low-cut, and easy to lose in a full load. Zipping a week's worth into one [mesh laundry bag](https://flexwearlab.com/blog/how-to-wash-grip-socks#product-B083SCJ8G8) keeps pairs together, and the Muchfun bags are the same ones we suggest for leggings. If you already wash your socks in a small load on their own, you don't need it.

## How long a pair should last

Pointe Studio is the only brand we found that puts a number on it: its FAQ says its grip socks "typically last 6 months to a year or longer" with proper care. It lists three things that change that: how often you wear and wash them, how you wash and dry them, and how hard your classes are, with high-impact workouts wearing the grips down faster.

Its advice for stretching a pair's life is the same advice that makes sense for any brand: "Rotating between pairs extends their life." Two or three pairs mean each one is washed less often. Replace a pair when the grips fade or the fabric thins, which Pointe Studio names as the signs of wear.

If you're replacing yours, our [grip sock guide](https://flexwearlab.com/yoga-pilates/best-grip-socks-pilates-barre) compares Tavi, ToeSox, Tucketts and Gaiam, and the same wash routine works for the rest of your class kit; see [how to wash workout clothes](https://flexwearlab.com/blog/how-to-wash-workout-clothes) for smells that survive a normal wash.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can you put grip socks in the dryer?

On low heat, for most brands. Tavi, ToeSox and Tucketts allow a low-heat dryer, while Pointe Studio and Gaiam's barre socks ask you to air dry or lay them flat. No maker we checked allows high heat.

### Can you use fabric softener on grip socks?

None of the makers' care instructions mention it. Gaiam asks for a mild detergent, and we leave softener out of activewear loads generally, so we'd leave it out of grip socks too.

### Should grip socks be washed inside out?

Yes. Tavi, ToeSox and Pointe Studio all say to wash them inside out on a gentle cycle.

### Can you bleach white grip socks?

No. Tavi, ToeSox, Pointe Studio and Gaiam's barre and toeless styles all say do not bleach, and none of the makers we checked allow it.

### How long do grip socks last?

Pointe Studio says six months to a year or longer with proper care, depending on how often you wear and wash them and how intense your classes are. Rotating two or three pairs makes each one last longer.
