## Quick answer

## Key takeaways

- Lululemon Wunder Train was the most reliable: opaque through barbell squats, sumo deadlifts and 90-minute hot yoga.
- AUROLA Dream replaces the Gymshark recommendation. The listing specifies 90% nylon/10% spandex, a scrunch style and a 25-inch inseam; the former Gymshark fit, ribbing and opacity test results do not transfer.
- Look for 220 to 320 GSM fabric with 15 to 25 percent spandex; under 200 GSM risks going sheer.
- Run the bend, deep-squat, stretch and light tests at home before wearing a new pair to the gym.
- Air dry and skip fabric softener; dryer heat breaks down spandex and is the usual reason leggings go sheer.

Dense nylon-spandex knit is what keeps leggings opaque at the bottom of a squat, and no pair we tested did it better than the Lululemon Wunder Train. If you lift, run or practise yoga and have been caught out by a sheer seat, start here; below are what makes fabric go see-through, the pairs that held up, and four checks to run at home before you trust a new pair.

**Selection update — October 19, 2026:** New alternatives on this page use manufacturer/listing evidence. Earlier testing describes the original models only; no old rating, fit result or measured performance transfers to a replacement.

**Selected-variant update — October 19, 2026:** AUROLA Dream Seamless Leggings — 25-inch is listing-based and untested by us. Earlier wear-test results apply only to the original tested models, not these replacements. The listing notes identify the selected size, seller and model differences.

The [Lululemon Wunder Train High-Rise Tight 25"](https://flexwearlab.com/activewear/best-squat-proof-leggings) was opaque in our earlier squat and hot-yoga tests. The new AUROLA Dream option below is selected from its listing and has not joined those tests; do not assume the same opacity or waistband behavior.

## Why leggings go see-through

"Squat-proof" means the fabric stays opaque when stretched. In a squat, lunge or deadlift the fabric pulls hardest across the glutes, thighs and knees, and that's where thin leggings turn translucent or show your underwear. A pair fails for one of four reasons:

- The knit is thin. When it stretches, the gaps between fibers open up.
- The cut is skimpy. Even good fabric goes sheer if there isn't enough of it for your range of motion.
- The size is too small. The fabric is already stretched before you move, whatever the brand promises.
- There's too little spandex. Cotton and low-spandex blends lack the density and recovery; the best squat-proof leggings usually have 15 to 25 percent spandex or elastane. The FTC's [textile labeling rules](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/threading-your-way-through-labeling-requirements-under-textile-wool-acts) require the tag to list each fibre by percentage, so the spandex share is always printed even when the fabric weight is not.

## What to check before you buy

**Fabric weight.** The best single indicator is weight in grams per square meter (GSM). Good workout leggings run about 220 to 320 GSM, and under 200 risks sheerness in deep stretches. Brands rarely print it, so judge by how substantial the fabric feels in your hand.

**Fiber blend.** Nylon and spandex (typically 75 to 85 percent nylon) is durable, compressive and opaque. Polyester and elastane is cheaper and wicks well. Premium brands often use their own named blends.

**Compression.** Firmer compression usually means denser fabric, which helps opacity, but it should feel supportive rather than restrictive. Heavy lifting suits firmer compression; yoga suits lighter.

**Waistband.** A high rise (8 to 10 inches) and a wide band (3 inches or more) stay put through compound lifts and spread the pull of the fabric so it doesn't thin out over the glutes. Silicone grip strips and a hidden drawcord help.

**Seams.** Flatlock seams lie flat and don't chafe in high-rep work.

## Tested models and selected alternatives

The earlier test covered lifting, HIIT, running and hot yoga. The current AUROLA alternative was not part of it, and its opacity is not established here.

### Lululemon Wunder Train High-Rise Tight 25": most reliable

The Wunder Train is Lululemon's training tight, in its sweat-wicking Everlux fabric. It has two layers: a soft, quick-drying one against the skin and a smooth, supportive one outside.

It stayed completely opaque through deep barbell squats, sumo deadlifts and long yoga flows. The high-rise waistband sits at the natural waist without digging in or rolling, and through a 90-minute hot yoga class, with heavy sweating, the leggings didn't move.

It fits true to size with a second-skin feel, the 25-inch inseam ends at the ankle on most heights, and it comes in sizes 0 to 20.

Buy it for HIIT and hot yoga if you want one pair that does both. Skip it if you want a legging you can buy from the brand on Amazon; Lululemon doesn't sell there.

### Nike One High-Waisted 7/8 Leggings: best for mixed training

Nike sells these as non-sheer, and in our testing that held. The Dri-FIT fabric handled the sweat of a 60-minute HIIT session, and the medium-weight fabric stayed opaque through jump squats, burpees and lunges. A hidden waistband pocket fits a key or card.

One annoyance: in exercises with deep hip flexion the waistband shifted now and then, and needed hitching up between sets. Not a deal-breaker, but noticeable if you want to set it and forget it.

It runs slightly small, so size up if you're between sizes. Sizes XS to 3XL.

Buy it for general gym work and the errands afterward. Skip it for heavy squat days if a moving waistband will bother you.

### AUROLA Dream Seamless Leggings — 25-inch — selected alternative

The [AUROLA Dream Seamless Leggings — 25-inch](https://flexwearlab.com/activewear/best-squat-proof-leggings#product-B0B3RCPPQ4) is the selected alternative to Gymshark High-Waisted Squat-Proof Seamless Leggings. **Selected variant:** women's Dark Black, Medium, 25-inch inseam. **What changes:** AUROLA Dream replaces the Gymshark recommendation. The listing specifies 90% nylon/10% spandex, a scrunch style and a 25-inch inseam; the former Gymshark fit, ribbing and opacity test results do not transfer.

The listing describes a high waist, four-way stretch and a gusset. We have not tested squat opacity, sweat visibility or hot-yoga comfort in this selected pair. Run a bend-and-squat check in your own size and lighting before keeping it.

**Offer check — October 19, 2026:** AUROLAUS; stock applies only to the selected variant. We have not wear-tested this replacement.

### CRZ YOGA Butterluxe Pocket Capris — 19-inch — selected alternative

The [CRZ YOGA Butterluxe Pocket Capris — 19-inch](https://flexwearlab.com/activewear/best-squat-proof-leggings#product-B0C7BFH34D) is a selected alternative to Under Armour Fly-By Compression Capri. **Selected variant:** Black, Medium. **Model and specification differences:** Black Medium, 19-inch CRZ Butterluxe pocket capris replace UA Fly-By. These are gently compressive yoga capris, not a verified UA performance-compression or squat-opacity equivalent.

Confirm the 19-inch inseam and pocket layout; neither the former UA fabric nor its squat-test result describes this replacement.

**Offer checked October 19, 2026:** CRZ YOGA. Availability applies only to this selected variant. This replacement is unrated and has not been independently wear-tested here.

## Two more you can buy from the brand on Amazon

The old Gymshark and UA slots now have AUROLA Dream 25-inch and CRZ Butterluxe Pocket Capris 19-inch alternatives. Both are listing-based selections: the capri has gentle compression, and neither has inherited squat-opacity results. Other cards retain their own dated notes.

- [CRZ YOGA Butterluxe](https://flexwearlab.com/activewear/best-squat-proof-leggings#product-B09P1G2952): a budget pick. In our [CRZ vs Lululemon test](https://flexwearlab.com/activewear/crz-yoga-vs-lululemon) it stayed opaque in a full squat in pale grey, where a pale Align showed the outline of underwear seams. Buy this one if you want light colors. Compression is light.
- [90 Degree By Reflex Power Flex](https://flexwearlab.com/activewear/best-squat-proof-leggings#product-B07C2PFHRX): also budget-priced, with more compression and structure. It was squat-proof in our [Lululemon dupes comparison](https://flexwearlab.com/activewear/lululemon-dupes-amazon-2026) and feels closer to the Wunder Train for lifting. It runs slightly small.

## Four tests to run at home

Do these before you take the tags off.

**Bend.** Face away from a mirror, bend forward as if touching your toes, and look back at your glutes and upper thighs. The color should stay even, with no lightening.

**Deep squat.** Drop as low as you can and hold for 10 to 15 seconds. Use an angled mirror or ask someone to look. It should stay opaque everywhere.

**Stretch.** Pull the fabric firmly in several directions over your hand. If you can see your fingers clearly, it will fail in the gym.

**Light.** Hold the leggings up to a bright light. A little glow is normal; distinct shapes or bright patches are not.

## Keeping them opaque

Leggings that pass on day one can fail a year later if they're cooked in the dryer.

- Wash inside out in cold water with a gentle detergent, and no fabric softener, which coats the fibers.
- Air dry. If you have to use the dryer, lowest heat only: high heat breaks down spandex, and lost stretch is what eventually makes them sheer.
- Fold rather than hang, so the waistband doesn't stretch, and keep them out of direct sun.
- Rotate at least two pairs so each gets time to recover between wears.

## Four assumptions that don't hold

**"Black is always opaque."** Black hides more than pale colors, but a thin black legging still goes sheer when stretched. Fabric matters more than color.

**"Expensive means better coverage."** Price often tracks quality, not always. Some mid-range pairs beat premium ones on opacity, and some expensive leggings put style first. Test before you assume.

**"Thicker is always better."** Too thick restricts movement and runs hot. You want fabric that feels substantial without feeling like a wetsuit.

**"Compression means squat-proof."** Compression often goes with denser fabric, but some compression leggings are thin and stretchy and go sheer under tension. Do the bend test.

For a top to go with them, see our [high-impact sports bras](https://flexwearlab.com/activewear/best-sports-bras-high-impact-2026), and for cheaper pairs that passed the same squat tests, our guide to [Lululemon dupes on Amazon](https://flexwearlab.com/activewear/lululemon-dupes-amazon-2026).

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What fabric weight makes leggings squat-proof?

220 to 320 grams per square meter, with 15 to 25 percent spandex or elastane. Below 200 GSM the fibers spread apart under tension and the fabric turns sheer across the glutes. Brands rarely print GSM on the tag, so use the weight in your hand and the light test as a guide.

### Are seamless leggings squat-proof?

Some seamless leggings remain opaque, but construction, size and color all matter. The selected AUROLA Dream has not been opacity-tested by us. Check it in a deep squat under bright light in the size you intend to keep.

### Do squat-proof leggings lose opacity over time?

Yes, mostly from heat and stretch. Dryer heat breaks down spandex, and wearing one pair every day without a break stretches the fibers past the point of recovery. Air dry, rotate at least two pairs, and expect even good leggings to thin after a couple of years of heavy use. Our guide on [how to wash workout clothes](https://flexwearlab.com/blog/how-to-wash-workout-clothes) has the full routine.

### Are light-colored leggings ever squat-proof?

Pale colors generally leave less margin for sheerness. Earlier results for Lululemon and CRZ do not establish performance for the selected Dark Black AUROLA pair, and no test of one color confirms another. Check the exact size and shade.

### Should I size up for better coverage?

Start with the selected brand’s waist and hip measurements. Do not carry a size-up recommendation from a retired model to CRZ or AUROLA. Check opacity under your actual stretch and lighting; a larger size alone does not establish squat coverage.
